Not long after departing his role in Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa is officially becoming a doctor!
Ncuti Gatwa, the actor known for playing the latest Doctor Who, will be awarded an honorary degree by the University of Glasgow later in 2024.
Ncuti Gatwa will receive an honorary doctorate from the University in June. He’ll be joined by other honorees including BBC journalist Sarah Smith, the Advocate General for Scotland, Baroness Catherine Smith, and musicians Deacon Blue and Eddi Reader.
I was so thrilled to hear the university recognize these amazing people! They shared that the individuals they chose have truly made a difference – not just in their careers, but in the world around them. It’s wonderful to see such positive contributions being celebrated.
University leader Professor Andy Schofield explained that honorary degrees are a way to celebrate people who have made significant and positive contributions to their fields and to society as a whole.

Their achievements reflect values that still motivate us all. I’m thrilled to officially welcome our honorary graduates to the University of Glasgow family as we mark this important occasion, and to celebrate their success with our graduating students.
Ncuti Gatwa played the Doctor for two seasons with Millie Gibson and Varada Sethu as his companions. He left the show in ‘The Reality War,’ quickly followed by a regeneration that brought back Billie Piper to the role.
Following his exit from the show, he explained to The Telegraph that he felt exhausted and burnt out after season 2. Despite the demanding workload, he described his time on Doctor Who as a truly magical experience.
It was relentless – I never had a chance to rest. I was working seven days a week for eight months, which was tough being away from my family. Before that, I’d already spent five years filming Sex Education in Cardiff, and we started filming Doctor Who while I was still finishing up the fourth season of Sex Ed.

He explained his decision to leave, saying it was difficult. He’d grown very fond of the show and would miss it, but ultimately felt it was time for a new challenge.
Besides starring in Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa has also been in movies like Barbie and The Roses, and TV shows such as Masters of the Air and Sex Education.
Beyond his screen work, he’s a talented stage performer. He’s played roles like Christopher Marlowe in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Born with Teeth, and appeared in The Importance of Being Earnest at the National Theatre.
Doctor Who will return this Christmas on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
