Beloved 1980s sci-fi film classic starring Kurt Russell is getting a remake after 45 years

Studio Canal is creating a new version of John Carpenter’s 1981 film, Escape from New York. Instead of a direct remake, they’re calling it a fresh take on the beloved classic.

Hugh Spearing, the company’s head of global marketing and distribution, announced the project at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, but didn’t share any information about who would be working on the new version.

This is the newest try to bring the franchise back to life for today’s audiences, but previous attempts have all fallen through. Several people, including producer Joel Silver, director Robert Rodriguez, and the directing team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, have worked on potential revivals that never made it past the planning stages.

The original movie featured Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a tough war veteran and criminal in a future version of the United States. He’s given just 24 hours to save the President after Air Force One crashes in Manhattan, which has been turned into a giant, inescapable prison.

When it was first released, the film earned praise, particularly for its bleak and gritty depiction of a future world, and it’s since gained a dedicated fanbase. Kurt Russell returned to play the same character in the 1996 sequel, Escape from LA, but that movie wasn’t as popular with audiences or critics.

It’ll be fascinating to see who they cast as Plissken in this new version of the film.

Reports surfaced that Wyatt Russell, known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and as Kurt Russell’s son, was considered for a reboot of a previous project. However, Russell himself wasn’t enthusiastic about the idea and believed taking the role could harm his career.

In a 2022 interview with Esquire, Kurt Russell said he wasn’t sure anyone else could play the character Snake Plissken. He wished whoever took on the role the best, but doubted it could be done successfully.

This isn’t the first time John Carpenter’s work has been revisited. The Halloween franchise has seen numerous reboots and remakes, and films like Assault on Precinct 13 and The Thing have also been reimagined.

During CinemaCon, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav hinted that more information about the Harry Potter reboot is on the way. We’ll be watching for announcements about who will direct and star in the new films.
