Justice Department Launches Compensation Claims for OneCoin Scam Victims

The Department of Justice is starting a process to allow victims of the OneCoin cryptocurrency scam to claim around $40 million in restitution. This happens as prosecutors continue to pursue legal action against those involved and bring them to justice.

People who lost money in the massive OneCoin cryptocurrency fraud may now be able to get some of it back. U.S. officials have started a process for victims to claim funds recovered from the scheme. Although the amount recovered is still small compared to the total fraud, this is an important step toward compensating those affected. The focus now is on how many victims will be able to submit successful claims and receive payments.

After $4B Fraud, OneCoin Victims Get Chance to Recover Funds via DOJ Program

The U.S. Department of Justice is now accepting claims from people harmed by the OneCoin scam, offering them a chance to get money back from funds seized by the government. An official announcement on Monday stated that over $40 million is available to be distributed to eligible victims.

Between 2014 and 2019, OneCoin collected more than $4 billion worldwide. While the money currently available doesn’t cover all the losses investors experienced, the program does provide a way for them to recover some of their funds.

People who invested in OneCoin while it was operating may be eligible for compensation. Claims need to be submitted using the process managed by Kroll. You can find the necessary forms online, but the deadline to submit them is June 30th.

The program is funded by money seized from criminals prosecuted by the Southern District of New York. These prosecutions focused on people who were laundering and distributing money gained through the illegal operation.

Cross-Border Prosecutions Mount in the Ongoing Case, But ‘Cryptoqueen’ Still Missing

Ruja Ignatova, a founder of the OneCoin cryptocurrency, is still a fugitive. She was added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list in June 2022, and authorities are offering a reward of up to $250,000 for information that leads to her capture. In addition, the U.S. Department of State is offering a reward of up to $5 million.

Several people connected to the company have been prosecuted in different areas. Karl Sebastian Greenwood, one of the founders, admitted to fraud and money laundering in 2022. As a result, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison and ordered to pay a $300 million fine.

In April 2024, Irina Dilkinska, a former legal and compliance officer, was sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to give up more than $111 million after admitting guilt to associated offenses.

The investigation has also reached Europe. German authorities have accused people of laundering hundreds of millions of dollars from OneCoin by transferring the money through banks and hidden offshore accounts.

William Morro was recently accused of being part of a plan to commit bank fraud. Authorities claim he concealed where money involved in the scheme came from and helped move it between different countries.

Efforts to seize assets are still underway, and a program to return funds to victims suggests a move away from pursuing criminal charges and towards providing compensation. However, due to the large amount of money lost, complete recovery isn’t expected.
