The Winds of Winter Release Leak Gets Official Response From GRRM’s Publisher (& It Actually Gives Fans More Hope)

After fifteen years since the last published book in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, fans are wondering if The Winds of Winter will ever be released. In the meantime, the Game of Thrones TV show finished its eight-season run and has spawned two spinoffs, with more planned—and a movie is even a possibility. While Martin has been working on other projects like Fire & Blood, the biggest anticipation remains for the next installment in the main series, Winds.

As a huge fan of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, I was so excited when I saw this rumor going around online! It started on 4Chan, claiming someone at the publisher, Bantam Spectra, had let slip that The Winds of Winter was finished, we’d hear something at Comic-Con, and it would be out this fall. I really wanted to believe it, even though a lot of us were cautious. Unfortunately, Bantam just released a statement to Entertainment Weekly saying it’s all false. It’s really disappointing, but at least we have a clear answer – even if it’s not the one we were hoping for.

Why Is The Winds Of Winter Taking So Long?

It’s funny, isn’t it? Even though everyone quickly pointed out that online rumor was almost certainly false, it’s actually made a lot of us more hopeful. I mean, usually the publisher just ignores these kinds of things – and there have been so many over the years! The fact that they actually bothered to respond… well, it makes you wonder. Could there be something to it after all? Maybe they do have a plan to finally release The Winds of Winter this year, and that response was a subtle hint?

okay his publishers are active so this must mean something

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like The Winds of Winter will be released anytime soon. In a January interview with The Hollywood Reporter, George R.R. Martin expressed pessimism about the progress of the next A Song of Ice and Fire book, stating:

I really need to get back to writing the Dunk and Egg stories, and there’s another Fire and Blood book planned as well. If I could just clear my plate a bit, I think I could finally finish The Winds of Winter. Everyone’s made it clear that’s the most important thing, but… honestly, sometimes I just don’t feel like working on it. [He sighed] I’m just so far behind on everything I need to do.

This book is expected to be the longest in the series, and it’s likely to be significantly longer than the others. The author has already written between 1100 and 1200 pages, and anticipates the final manuscript will be 1500-1600 pages, possibly even more. It’s a massive project, but one the author is determined to complete. Considering the book’s length, the author’s other commitments, and the many storylines that need to be resolved – especially as it’s the second-to-last book in the series – it’s understandable why it’s taking so much time.

Several major plot points need to be resolved in the books: Jon Snow’s return to life, Daenerys Targaryen’s journey to Westeros (after dealing with Meereen), and the potential arrival of Young Griff/Aegon Targaryen. The growing threat of the Others and the many other characters and storylines also need to converge towards a conclusion. However, this is complicated by the fact that the TV series already ended, and its controversial finale might influence how readers perceive similar events in the books, even if the destinations differ.

Despite the long wait, there’s still hope that George R.R. Martin will finish The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. He isn’t obligated to anyone, and good writing can’t be forced or hurried – thankfully, he seems dedicated to crafting a quality conclusion. Considering how much work he’s already put in, it’s likely the books will eventually be published, though the timeline – whether this year, 2027, or later – remains uncertain. When the books do appear, we can be sure the news won’t break on a forum like 4Chan.
