Animator on ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Movie Calls Out “Disrespectful” Leak

This year, Paramount+ will release a new movie called The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. Continuing the story of Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender, the film follows him as an adult on a journey to discover an ancient power. This power could save his people, but he must find it before it falls into the wrong hands and destroys the peace he and his friends fought so hard to create.

The movie was originally scheduled for release on October 9th, but it was leaked online over the weekend. Animator Julia Schoel has since shared her reaction on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Our team spent years creating the Aang movie, hoping to share it with audiences in theaters. It was incredibly disappointing to see the film leaked online and scenes shared widely on social media. While I understand people are upset with Paramount’s choice to pull the movie from cinemas, using that as an excuse to pirate it isn’t right. Even waiting until after the official release to watch illegally would have been preferable to this. It’s deeply disrespectful to the artists who poured their hearts and effort into making the film.

Paramount initially intended to release The Legend of Aang in cinemas, but later changed plans and opted for a streaming release. Schoel was reportedly unhappy with this change.

Schoel addressed some comments on her post, including one questioning the difference between watching a pirated copy now versus after the movie’s release, since it won’t be shown in theaters. Schoel agreed it was a valid point, explaining that leaking a film before release hurts it when it needs support the most – before any marketing or premieres can build anticipation and protect the film’s reputation and the careers of those involved. Pirating after release, however, happens once the film has already had a chance to reach audiences legitimately and doesn’t cause the same damage.

While pre-release leaks happen with movies sometimes, the leak of The Legend of Aang is significant because it happened well before the official release date and is a nearly complete version. Paramount is working to remove leaked copies from the internet, but as of now, the movie is still scheduled to come out in October.

The cast of The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender includes Eric Nam as Aang, Dionne Quan as Toph Beifong, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Steven Yeun as Zuko, and Dee Bradley Baker as Momo. Ke Huy Quan, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Peta Sergeant, and Freida Pinto also star. Dave Bautista will be voicing one of the villains.

Avatar Studios is developing several animated projects, including a new series called Avatar: Seven Havens which will premiere on Paramount+ in 2027. Fans can also look forward to the second season of the live-action Last Airbender remake on Netflix, arriving June 25th.
