A new Lord of the Rings film is in the works, focusing on Aragorn’s quest to find Gollum before Sauron does. While Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Elijah Wood (Frodo), and Lee Pace (Thranduil) are reprising their roles, Viggo Mortensen will not be returning as Aragorn. Instead, Jamie Dornan will take on the part of Strider, making this a surprising recast for a beloved character.
Andy Serkis is directing the new movie and will also be back as Gollum. He’d previously announced that the role of Aragorn would be recast, and that was confirmed at a Warner Bros. event. While the official reason Viggo Mortensen isn’t returning hasn’t been revealed, it likely comes down to his own choice. The film is set during the time of the original movies and would almost certainly require significant digital effects to make Mortensen look younger – something he previously expressed reluctance about when discussing a potential return for The Hunt for Gollum in 2024.
I’m not fully aware of the current situation, but I’ll likely find out eventually. I really enjoyed playing that character and learned a lot from the experience. However, I’d only consider reprising the role if it felt like a good fit for my current age and stage in my career. It wouldn’t make sense to do it otherwise.
Now that some characters are coming back, the process of making them look younger might be simpler for a few of them. Frodo likely won’t have many scenes, and Gandalf is already meant to appear old. While Viggo Mortensen has aged gracefully, Aragorn will be a central figure in the hunt for Gollum, probably requiring the most significant use of de-aging technology.
Jamie Dornan Is A Good Choice For Aragorn – But Will It Even Matter?

Viggo Mortensen’s performance as Strider/Aragorn is incredibly iconic, making it a tough act to follow. However, Jamie Dornan would be a strong choice to take on the role. He has the right appearance, but importantly, he’s a versatile actor. Though many still recognize him from the Fifty Shades films, he’s demonstrated his talent in series like The Fall and The Tourist, as well as the film Belfast. Dornan has a natural charisma and can portray both quiet intensity and a commanding presence – qualities that would suit the character well. He’s also got some interesting projects coming up, including Michael Cera’s directorial debut, Love Is Not the Answer, and a role playing twins in the Netflix series The Undertow.
It might feel strange seeing a new actor take on the role, particularly with so many original cast members returning. However, the new actor deserves a fair shot. Whether he gets it is another question. Replacing a well-known character in a big franchise is always controversial, and many fans are already skeptical about The Hunt for Gollum. There are concerns the story doesn’t offer enough new material and might not live up to the high standard set by Peter Jackson’s original trilogy.
Given that the movie was going to happen, using a younger actor to play Aragorn seems like the best solution. While digitally making Viggo Mortensen look younger could have been problematic – especially throughout an entire film and potentially taking attention away from his eventual return – Jamie Dornan will hopefully capture the spirit of the original performance while still making the role his own. Hopefully, the upcoming film, The Hunt for Gollum, will prove any skeptics wrong. We’ll see how it all turns out when it’s released on December 17th, 2027.
