Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Iconic Action Sequel Is Leaving Netflix

The 1984 fantasy film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger will soon be removed from Netflix. It’s a follow-up to the 1982 movie based on the stories of Robert E. Howard.

Conan the Destroyer is leaving Netflix next month

Starting May 1st, 2026, the movie Conan the Destroyer will no longer be available to stream on Netflix.

A few years after the first film, Conan the Barbarian, this story finds Conan grieving the loss of his love, Valeria. He’s approached by Queen Taramis with a risky job: protecting her niece, Princess Jehnna, as she seeks a powerful magical item. The queen tempts Conan by offering to bring Valeria back to life if he succeeds. He accepts, and is joined on the quest by skilled allies, including the strong warrior Zula and the cunning thief Malak.

Richard Fleischer directed the film, which was based on a story by Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway, and written for the screen by Stanley Mann. The movie stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan, alongside Olivia d’Abo, Grace Jones, Sarah Douglas, Tracey Walter, and Mako, among a talented cast.

Similar to the first Conan movie, the initial cut of Conan the Destroyer contained a significant amount of violence and even a scene with sexual content. However, producer Dino De Laurentiis thought making the film less explicit would broaden its appeal and increase its chances of success. Consequently, the filmmakers removed a number of scenes before the movie was released.

In a 1984 interview, Catherine Douglas explained that a sex scene she filmed didn’t make the final cut of the movie – she only discovered this after it was released in theaters. She described the scene to PEOPLE magazine as energetic and sensual, involving a lot of physical activity and ‘grease and sweat.’

Released on June 29, 1984, Conan the Destroyer wasn’t well-received by critics. Currently, it has a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on critics’ reviews and a 38% audience score. The film earned a little over $31 million worldwide, which was significantly less than the $68.8 million earned by the first movie, Conan the Barbarian.

The studio first talked about bringing back the Conan franchise in 2012, with Arnold Schwarzenegger expected to return. After a long wait, the project is now moving forward with Christopher McQuarrie, the writer behind Top Gun: Maverick, developing a new Conan movie called King Conan. This film will be set four decades after the first Conan movie, skipping over the sequel, Conan the Destroyer.
