Everyone’s anticipating a big box office battle between Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three – some are even calling it “Dunesday.” Right now, Marvel seems likely to win. The lowest-grossing Avengers film made $1.4 billion – much more than the highest-grossing Dune movie, which earned $714.8 million. Marvel is also heavily promoting Doomsday by bringing back popular characters from the earlier Avengers films, like Captain America and Thor. However, some industry experts think Marvel might have reason to worry about Dune 3, and that concern has increased after a strong presentation at the CinemaCon convention this year.
Warner Bros. showcased upcoming films at CinemaCon last night, with a major focus on Dune: Part Three. They showed the first seven minutes of the movie to attendees, and the preview was very well-received. Many believe it positions Dune: Part Three as a strong contender for the most popular film this holiday season.
Disney needs to be seriously worried about how ‘Dune 3’ will perform against the next Avengers movie. The footage revealed today was incredibly impressive, and ‘Dune’’s stars, like Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet, feel more exciting and current than Marvel’s cast, who are also clearly in need of a big success.

The opening seven minutes of ‘Dune: Part Three’ are incredibly impressive – so much so that Disney is reportedly delaying the release of the ‘Avengers Doomsday’ trailer until later tonight.

Marvel Can Generate Hype for Doomsday Soon
While Dune: Part Three isn’t expected to make as much money overall as Avengers: Doomsday, it could potentially limit how much the latter film ultimately earns. Warner Bros. has given Dune 3 an exclusive run in IMAX theaters during its opening weekend, and tickets are already selling out far in advance. These large-screen formats are now a key part of the movie experience, which will significantly help Dune 3’s performance. The first trailer showed that this film is perfect for the biggest screens, and fans are eager to see how this epic sci-fi story concludes.
Following a positive response to the trailer and a preview of the first seven minutes – which some online compared to Saving Private Ryan – Warner Bros. is showing strong confidence in Dune: Part Three, even though it’s scheduled to be released around the same time as a new Avengers movie. However, Disney and Marvel will soon get a chance to share their plans. Disney is holding a presentation at CinemaCon on Thursday, April 16th, and will likely highlight Doomsday, which is expected to be a major summer blockbuster. Disney plans to showcase impressive footage to demonstrate how Doomsday can compete with Dune 3, even without being shown in IMAX theaters.
After a significant presentation at CinemaCon, a new trailer for Doomsday could be released to the public very soon. Marvel previously released teasers for Doomsday over four weeks while Avatar: Fire and Ash was in theaters. These previews focused on what the story meant for individual characters, but didn’t reveal much about the overall plot. With the summer movie season starting soon – including the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in May – now is an ideal time to share a full trailer, potentially offering a first real look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe looks quite different today than it did in 2019 with the release of Avengers: Endgame. While Marvel is still capable of creating successful films, the mixed quality of the current Multiverse Saga has lessened excitement for Avengers: Doomsday. Many fans are uncertain about what to anticipate, and it seems Marvel is relying on familiar elements to build interest. The studio could ease these concerns by releasing some strong films in the coming months.
