Comic books are more popular and valuable than ever, as evidenced by soaring prices at auctions. Typically, the most expensive comics showcase landmark events, like the famous “The Death of Superman,” or introduce characters for the very first time. The value of these comics can change depending on how popular a character is at the moment – for example, comics featuring Supergirl are likely to be in high demand with the release of a new movie or TV show.
Not every comic book character is equally valuable. Here are some of the most sought-after issues, showing just how important—and collectible—these characters are. These are the kinds of comics collectors hope to discover!
5. Detective Comics #27 (1939)

Batman and Spider-Man are incredibly popular and widely promoted characters, so it’s not surprising to find Batman featured more than once. The first Batman story, appearing in Detective Comics #27 by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, can sell for as much as $1.8 million. Collectors have reportedly paid over $3 million for copies in excellent condition.
4. Batman #1 (1940)

Next is Batman #1 from 1940, which can sell for as much as $2.2 million. Even copies in only fair condition often go for between $100,000 and $500,000. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, this comic doesn’t tell Batman’s origin story, but it is the first to showcase two of his famous villains. Batman #1 is a collection of short stories, including one introducing The Joker and another called “The Cat,” which first featured the character who would become known as Catwoman.
3. Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962)

The cover of Amazing Fantasy #15 is iconic – it introduces Spider-Man, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and tells his origin story. It’s a widely recognized image, even used recently in promotional material for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. A pristine copy of this comic (graded 9.6 by CGC) sold for a remarkable $3.6 million in 2021. While comics from the Silver Age were printed in large quantities, copies in good condition can still fetch up to $30,000.
2. Superman #1 (1939)

While not Superman’s very first appearance, issue #1 was the first comic book entirely devoted to a single superhero. A pristine copy of this comic recently sold for an amazing $9.1 million, solidifying Superman’s status as the most valuable character in comic book history. Because it was printed on cheap paper, well-preserved copies are very scarce, and sales of $5 million or more are common.
1. Action Comics #1 (1938)

Considered the most valuable comic book ever, Action Comics #1 famously introduced Superman and recently sold for a record $15 million. While that copy was in excellent condition, another issue is up for auction this week at Heritage Auctions. Though it’s in slightly worse shape, it’s still predicted to fetch around $5 million. This first edition features an early version of Superman, one who hadn’t yet developed all his powers and didn’t have any iconic villains.
