As a huge Sci-Fi fan, I’m so excited – and a little worried – about a big movie coming out in 2026. It looks like it’s going to really shake up one of the best Sci-Fi series we have right now, and honestly, it seems like they’re going to bring back a really heartbreaking plot twist that still gets to me. Everything I’ve seen suggests 2026 is going to be a great year for Sci-Fi, with awesome stuff coming out in theaters and on TV.
Ryan Gosling’s film, Project Hail Mary, is doing very well in theaters worldwide, having already earned $514.7 million and expected to exceed $650 million in total. Meanwhile, science fiction movies are also popular on streaming platforms, with titles like Mercy starring Chris Pratt and War Machine with Alan Ritchson currently leading the charts globally.
A new Star Wars movie is coming to theaters in 2026, marking the franchise’s return after the 2019 release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which received mixed reactions. Pedro Pascal, known for The Mandalorian & Grogu, will lead the charge in launching a fresh chapter for Star Wars when the film hits theaters on May 22nd.
Recently, the Star Wars franchise hasn’t been as strong as it once was. Many now consider Denis Villeneuve’s Dune to be the leading science fiction series, with both films and a television show. As the Dune trilogy concludes with Dune: Part Three in 2026, it will feature a significant character transformation, mirroring a successful Star Wars storyline and suggesting how audiences might react.
Dune: Part Three Changes Paul Atreides’ Status
The first two Dune films showed Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides as a classic hero, losing everything and then rising to lead a rebellion. However, the upcoming Dune: Part Three will shift that focus, presenting Paul not as someone to admire, but as a warning about the dangers of power.
I just watched the first trailer for Dune: Part Three, and it’s clear Paul is completely consumed by the holy war he initiated. Knowing the books, things apparently take a really dark turn under his rule. Timothée Chalamet, speaking at CinemaCon (where ScreenRant was present), said Paul has essentially become everything he feared – a powerful emperor presiding over a bleak, oppressive universe. It sounds like he’s become his own worst nightmare.
Dune: Part Three’s Paul Atreides Change Repeats A Star Wars Success
The way Paul Atreides loses his heroic status, as shown by Timothée Chalamet and hinted at in the Dune: Part Three trailer, isn’t a surprise to many science fiction fans. The Star Wars saga, particularly with Anakin Skywalker, followed a remarkably similar path. In fact, the most compelling part of the Star Wars prequels was watching Hayden Christensen’s Anakin transform from a potential savior into a destructive force.
Similar to Anakin Skywalker, Paul Atreides in Dune is portrayed as a prophesied savior. However, the story hints that Paul, like Anakin, may become consumed by war and lose his way, as suggested in the upcoming Dune: Part Three. Considering fans connected with Anakin’s tragic arc in Star Wars, a similar journey for Paul – from inspiring leader to a burdened and troubled figure – could resonate with audiences, even though it signifies the end of a significant period.
