Everyone initially underestimated A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but it’s quickly become a fan favorite. Despite ongoing speculation about the release of The Winds of Winter – and a denial from the publisher – the biggest disappointment this week is news of delays for the Dunk & Egg HBO prequel. This highlights how much fans are eager to see the adventures of this beloved Game of Thrones duo.
As a huge fan, I was so excited to hear they were filming in Northern Ireland again – it just feels right for this world! Then they headed to Gran Canaria, Spain, to create the look of southern Westeros for Season 2, specifically the area known as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. But, sadly, they’ve hit some major delays due to incredibly heavy rainfall – apparently, the worst they’ve seen there in over ten years! It’s a real blow because a key part of the season’s story revolves around a long, harsh summer and a terrible drought affecting the Reach. It’s ironic, really – down in the Dornish Marches, someone’s probably uttering a somber “Summer is coming,” and it’s not a good thing at all!
‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 2’s Release Window May Be Delayed
Despite damage to the filming locations from recent rain and floods, HBO plans to relocate production to keep the series on track. While this will likely increase the show’s costs, Warner Bros. is used to dealing with unexpected challenges in filmmaking and is prepared to manage the situation. The main concern is that this disruption could affect the planned yearly release schedule for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a strategy designed to avoid the delays that have often troubled expensive fantasy shows like House of the Dragon.
Releasing the series every year is really important, particularly because the new prequel is so short. Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is only a few hours long, and with so many new TV shows coming out all the time, something that’s relatively brief can easily get overlooked if people have to wait a long time between seasons, no matter how much they enjoy it.

The show is currently expected to arrive in 2027, but a release in January or winter seems less certain. The first season finished filming in September 2024, but wasn’t released on HBO until fifteen months later due to distribution issues, which moved it from a planned 2025 debut. Although this delay was likely caused by HBO’s scheduling and not problems with making the show itself, it suggests fans might have a similar wait after filming for Season 2 is complete.
For most of its run, from 2011 to 2019, HBO consistently released new seasons of Game of Thrones in April, which was a big part of its appeal. As a longtime viewer, I always appreciated that predictability. Television is often a source of comfort, so the long wait between seasons of House of the Dragon isn’t just about fans being impatient. It’s about losing that reliable schedule. People want shows they can consistently escape into, and the original plan for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to release episodes every year seemed like a great way to fix House of the Dragon’s biggest problem. Hopefully, the show will get back on a regular schedule soon.
