The Star Wars saga expands with Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, a new animated series created by Dave Filoni (known for Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Bad Batch). The series stars Darth Maul, voiced by Sam Witwer, and explores a critical time in his life. Having barely survived the events of Order 66, Maul is working in secret during the rise of the Empire, attempting to restore his criminal organization, the “Shadow Collective,” after it was broken up when the Republic captured him.
In episodes 3 and 4 of Shadow Lord, Maul works on two things at the same time: strengthening his criminal organization and trying to convince a young Jedi to join him and become his apprentice. He doesn’t quite succeed in turning the Jedi (not yet!), but he does make significant progress in rebuilding his criminal empire, securing a key component for his return to power.
The Pyke Syndicate Falls… Before Maul

In Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, chapter four, titled “Pride and Vengeance,” Maul cleverly uses a small-time gangster named Looti Vario (voiced by Chris Diamantopoulos) to infiltrate the Pyke Syndicate. Vario approaches the Pyke leader, Marg Krim (Stephen Stanton), pretending to be a traitor who’s informing on Maul. However, this is a setup: Vario intends for Maul to ambush the Pykes and begin attacking them. Once the attack begins, Vario uses a stun ray on Maul. The Pykes bring the captured crime lord to Krim, who quickly discovers that the hooded figure isn’t actually Maul. The real Maul then appears, using the Force to pull his lightsaber from Krim’s side. He uses the floating weapon to fatally wound Krim, killing him instantly. Maul then forces the remaining Pykes to submit, and appoints the captain of the guard, Kalt, as his new leader of the Pyke Syndicate.
This event was crucial for understanding Darth Maul’s journey and the future of the Star Wars criminal world. It explains how Maul rebuilt his powerful criminal empire, which we see flourishing in films like Solo: A Star Wars Story through groups like Crimson Dawn and the Pykes. It also connects to the Clone Wars animated series, which showed Maul secretly building the Shadow Collective while hiding in the Outer Rim, particularly on Mandalore. By joining forces with Mandalore’s Death Watch, Maul brought the Pykes, Black Sun, and other criminal organizations under his control, ruling the Shadow Collective with absolute authority.
The Pykes are a significant group in the Star Wars universe, originating from the planet Oba Diah, a major source of the powerful drug known as spice. This control over spice gave them immense influence, which they used to build the Pyke Syndicate into one of the galaxy’s most dangerous criminal organizations, comparable to groups like Black Sun and the Hutts. They were known for carrying out various illicit acts, including the murder of Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas at the behest of Darth Tyranus (Count Dooku), a plot intended to conceal the creation of the clone army. Despite surviving the Clone Wars as part of Maul’s Shadow Collective, the Pykes continued to prosper during the Imperial Era and into the time of the New Republic. However, their power began to wane when Boba Fett’s group seized control of their operations on Tatooine, eliminating the Pyke leaders stationed there.

Beyond being a visually impressive death scene in Star Wars – and cleverly mirroring Kylo Ren’s killing of Snoke in The Last Jedi – the Maul – Shadow Lord comic is effectively filling in backstory for an important character. Other upcoming Star Wars stories could benefit from this approach.
