Traditionally, Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) and open-world games haven’t often combined, mainly because of budget limitations and established JRPG conventions. Older JRPGs featured large overworld maps that gave players a sense of freedom, but these lacked the intricate details and interactivity found in games like Assassin’s Creed, Skyrim, and The Witcher 3. As open-world games with rich, detailed environments have become popular, JRPG fans have increasingly wanted to experience the familiar elements of their favorite genre within those kinds of settings.
Luckily, a few games successfully blend the compelling stories and characters of Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) with the large, detailed, and immersive environments of open-world games. It’s a fantastic combination – and a clever one! – that truly shines when executed well. These open-world JRPGs are definitely worth checking out, and the very best ones rank among the greatest games of all time.
5. Crystal Project

I’ve been playing Crystal Project, and honestly, it’s amazing what the solo developer, Andrew Willman, has created! It’s one of the only open-world JRPGs made by a small indie team that I’ve seen. It really nails that classic Final Fantasy feel with turn-based battles and retro-style sprites, but then throws you into this huge, vertical open world made of voxels. Seriously, you can climb anything – mountains, huge trees, everything! And the best part is, exploring actually pays off. The world isn’t just pretty to look at; there’s real stuff to find.
As a huge JRPG fan, I’ve found Crystal Project to be something special. The story is good, with plenty of fun and well-written scenes, but it doesn’t drive the whole game like in a typical Final Fantasy title. And honestly, that’s what makes it so amazing as an open-world RPG! It really focuses on creating a world that’s just incredibly rewarding to explore, and it’s endlessly satisfying to get lost in. I truly think Crystal Project is one of the most overlooked JRPGs ever, and if you love open-world games with a bit of that Final Fantasy feel, you absolutely need to check it out.
4. Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time

Developed by the incredibly talented Level-5 – a studio that doesn’t get enough credit – Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time continues the tradition of excellent games they’re known for. Level-5 previously created the beloved Nintendo DS RPG Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies, and this new Fantasy Life game is just as impressive. It significantly improves upon the original 3DS game, offering a surprisingly deep and constantly changing experience that will keep you amazed throughout its long playtime.
Okay, so the best part of this game is definitely the open world, Ginormosia – it’s huge and reminds me a lot of Breath of the Wild. You can spend ages just collecting stuff, battling enemies, and doing side quests. Honestly, it’s a little weird that it feels almost optional, but if you do take the time to explore, it really adds to the experience. It already made Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time a fantastic game, but Ginormosia pushes it over the top, making it super easy to recommend to anyone looking for a detailed JRPG to get lost in.
3. Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV is considered the ultimate open-world Japanese role-playing game. Its expansive and beautiful world rivals those found in popular Western games, and the fast-paced, real-time combat system creates dynamic and engaging moments. It felt like Square Enix’s attempt to embrace the growing popularity of open-world games, and despite its flaws, it remains a visually stunning and enjoyable game to explore.
Despite its flaws, Final Fantasy XV is a truly impressive open-world game thanks to its iconic car, the feeling of a road trip, and its beautiful graphics. It leaves you hoping Square Enix will build on its strengths – something they tried with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, though not quite as ambitiously. If you play FFXV as intended, following the story in order (which is a lot to ask!), it offers unique and unforgettable moments that few other Japanese role-playing games can match.
2. Xenoblade Chronicles X

While perhaps not the strongest game in the Xenoblade Chronicles series, Xenoblade Chronicles X boasts an incredibly vast open world – one of the largest ever created in a JRPG, and a truly massive one overall. The planet Mira is unbelievably huge and completely open for exploration, with only a single loading screen when returning to your base. The diverse and detailed environments, combined with roaming enemies, create a vibrant and living world. And traveling across the landscape in the customizable Skell mechs is a real joy.
While the story in Xenoblade Chronicles X isn’t its strongest point, that wasn’t the main goal for Monolith Soft. They clearly aimed to create a sprawling open-world experience, similar to popular Western games at the time. The game is packed with content – tons of side quests, characters to interact with, exploration tasks, areas to discover, and challenging bosses. Like Final Fantasy XV, Xenoblade Chronicles X really captures the feeling of a classic open-world game. It might not be the absolute best open-world JRPG ever made, but it’s definitely the best you can play on the Nintendo Switch.
1. Yakuza: Like A Dragon

In my opinion, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the best open-world JRPG out there. While its sequel offers a larger world with more things to do, it doesn’t quite capture the same magic. Like a Dragon was a fresh start for the series, making it easy for new players to jump in. You don’t need to have played any previous Yakuza games to enjoy it – it’s perfectly understandable on its own, even though it does connect to the larger story for longtime fans.
The characters in this game are unforgettable, and the story is both grand and deeply moving. The turn-based combat is a fresh and thrilling experience, but the real star is the expansive open world, packed with things to see and do. It brilliantly recreates the familiar streets of Kamarucho and adds the massive new district of Isezaki Ijincho – a peak in the series’ history of city design, offering more activities than ever while maintaining the intricate detail fans love. If you’re looking for an open-world JRPG with incredible exploration and a truly powerful story, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a perfect choice. Just be prepared to cry – you’ll definitely want to have some tissues handy, as this is one of the best JRPGs ever made.
