Coffee Stain Publishing and Easy Trigger Studios have announced that HUNTDOWN: OVERTIME, a prequel to the action game Huntdown described as a “grindhouse roguelite,” will be available in Early Access on Steam for PC starting May 7th.
Okay, so here’s the deal with the Early Access version: the main way the game plays is pretty much finalized. We’re not planning any huge changes to how things work. Things like weapons and how you level up your character are almost done. When the full game comes out, expect a bigger, more polished world with a lot more stuff to do, but don’t worry, we’re not going to completely rework everything that’s already built. It’s more about adding to what’s there, not tearing it down and starting over.
Here is an overview of the game, via Coffee Stain Publishing:
About
Companies have transformed dangerous streets into opportunities for bounty hunters, and John Sawyer is poised to profit. This fast-paced roguelite prequel features a cycle of hunting, fighting, upgrading, and repeating, where each strategic improvement replaces flesh with cybernetic parts, building a powerful, chrome-enhanced warrior.
Combat and Runs: Die Hard, Hunt Harder
Experience the fast-paced, action-packed thrills of classic VHS-era movies. This game combines precise controls with intense gunfights in a roguelite format, delivering a constant rush of adrenaline. Take on bounties and fight to survive, and when you fall, Tony will rebuild you to be even stronger.
Each race takes you further into dangerous gang territory—from vibrant city streets to barren wastelands. Decide where to go, focus on your enemies, and quickly adjust your strategy. Every time you fall, you learn from your mistakes, and every time you’re reborn, you become more lethal. This is how John Sawyer becomes a cybernetic legend—a story of transformation from ordinary man to powerful icon.
Weapons and Upgrades: Build the Perfect Killer
Bring the fight with a wide range of weapons, from guns and swords to specialized tactical equipment. Or, if you prefer a different approach, freeze your enemies with cryo-tech and finish them off with an electric baton.
Find cybernetic enhancements and weapon permits hidden in enemy areas. You can make these upgrades permanent by unlocking them after each run, fundamentally changing Sawyer’s combat abilities. With options like stronger limbs and new combat modifications, there are hundreds of ways to customize Sawyer and create a fighting style that suits you.
Every attempt gives you a chance to start fresh. Save your rewards, use them to make lasting improvements, and then return with even more power. Change up your strategy – you can go in guns blazing or use stealth and blades. The city’s criminals won’t see it coming.
Handcrafted Pixel Art Visuals
This game beautifully blends detailed pixel art with cutting-edge lighting, creating a unique mix of old-school style and modern visuals. It’s heavily inspired by the look of early 80s B-movies – think striking reds against black backgrounds and dramatic contrasts. Forget polished, nostalgic vibes; this has the raw energy of a classic VHS tape.
Welcome to the grindhouse. Welcome to Overtime.
