Parts of ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ That Make No Sense

A Yellow Star Initiates the Plot Then Vanishes From the Movie
The movie starts with Bowser Jr. kidnapping Rosalina, hoping to use her power to fuel a cannon that could destroy everything. (It’s a bit unclear what his plan is after that, considering the consequences!) He captures her along with one of her Lumas – small, colorful, star-shaped creatures. A yellow Luma manages to escape and travels to the Mushroom Kingdom, where it crashes and asks Princess Peach for help saving Rosalina.
This is a pretty standard beginning for a kids’ adventure movie. Usually, the character who asks for help would then join the heroes, explaining why they need rescuing and how they found them.
But that doesn’t happen here. After asking Peach for help, the yellow Luma simply vanishes. It turns into a Launch Star to send Peach and Toad on their way and is never seen again. It’s like it sacrificed itself for the mission, which feels like something the movie should at least acknowledge!

Bowser Spends the Whole Film Trying to Prove He’s Reformed, Then Goes Evil Again
Bowser’s character in Super Mario Galaxy is surprisingly inconsistent. After being shrunk in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, he starts the game living in a tiny castle at Peach’s house, claiming he’s reformed. Mario is suspicious, but Bowser genuinely seems to want to be better, even offering to take the blame for his past actions to help Mario and friends find Rosalina. However, his son, Bowser Jr., repeatedly tries to cause trouble, and Bowser struggles with whether to support his son’s villainous plans. Ultimately, the movie rushes towards its climax and abruptly reverts Bowser to a typical villain, with no clear reason for the change in his behavior. He simply stops questioning his son and resumes being the bad guy for the final fight.

Bowser Love Peach, But Also Doesn’t Care What Happens to Her
Bowser’s feelings for Princess Peach were a major driving force in the first Mario movie. At the start of Mario Galaxy, he’s still clearly infatuated, even painting tiny pictures of her. However, by the middle of the movie, he seems to have completely forgotten about her – even while his son, Bowser Jr., is actively trying to harm her and her sister! It’s confusing: does Bowser truly love Peach, or does he barely even know she exists? He can’t seem to make up his mind!

Bowser Says He’s a Bad Dad, But Only Ever Acts like Father of the Year Material
The movie sidelines Peach and attempts to develop Bowser’s character by focusing on his relationship with his son, Bowser Jr. Bowser claims he wasn’t a good father, always being away to conquer kingdoms. However, the only glimpse we get of their past shows a surprisingly affectionate Bowser putting his son to bed and entertaining him with elaborate, self-made puppet shows. He constantly hugs Bowser Jr., calls him endearing names, and showers him with attention. If this is what constitutes being a bad father, the author jokes, then they clearly haven’t been doing a very good job themselves, as they’ve never created custom puppets to help their children sleep.

Mario Only Has an Italian Accent In One Scene
There’s been a lot of discussion about Chris Pratt’s voice acting as Mario in the animated movies, and it’s a valid point of criticism. The iconic Mario has a very specific voice – he’s meant to sound Italian, from Brooklyn, and often exclaims “Wahoo!” in a high-pitched tone.
In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Pratt initially tries to mimic a stereotypical New York plumber’s accent when Mario and Luigi are first called to fix a blocked pipe. But after that scene, he largely abandons the accent and speaks in his regular voice.
What’s particularly noticeable is that when Mario says one of his famous lines, Pratt doesn’t even attempt to replicate the character’s usual sound. For example, when offered a ride by Fox McCloud, he simply says “Let’s go!” instead of the expected “Let’s-a go!” It feels like a missed opportunity to capture the essence of the character.

Some Dinosaurs Look Like Yoshi. Some Dinosaurs Look Like This.
I understand it’s strange. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set in a world where mushrooms talk, princesses create stars, and old video game accessories can change people into babies. It doesn’t really make sense, and that’s okay. I shouldn’t even be questioning why there are dinosaurs – some normal, some wearing boots and able to talk – who eat people and then… well, let’s just say people come out unharmed in eggs. Maybe if the movie showed even a little curiosity about its own bizarre world, it wouldn’t be so frustrating. But it doesn’t seem to care at all, and honestly, that’s the biggest problem.
