CBS Expands ‘Fire Country’ Universe With New Medical Spin-Off

For the past few seasons, CBS has been building the show Fire Country into something more than just a typical crime procedural. With the addition of Sheriff Country and both shows confirmed for the 2026-27 season, the town of Edgewater is increasingly becoming the focal point of a larger, interconnected universe of shows.

According to Deadline, CBS is exploring a new spin-off for the Fire Country and Sheriff Country world. Currently in early development, the potential series, tentatively called Med Country, would be a medical drama centered around a team of doctors in Edgewater. This would expand the franchise beyond its current focus on firefighters and law enforcement.

It’s natural to compare this new show to successful franchises like NBC’s One Chicago or the former ABC pairing of Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19. The show is being discussed as a way to expand an existing world of emergency services and police dramas to include a medical element – a common way for a network show to become a long-running series. This gives CBS opportunities for shared storylines, familiar faces, and a unified approach to programming centered around a consistent location.

A potential way to launch the new show is already being discussed. CBS is reportedly thinking of introducing the main character in an episode of their existing series, Sheriff Country, during its second season. This is a common tactic for networks, and it’s a smart move in this case. When dramas build a shared universe, it usually works better to introduce new characters through a show viewers already enjoy, rather than asking them to start with a completely new idea.

The team behind the potential new series signals CBS is prioritizing a familiar feel over a complete overhaul. With Max Thieriot, Joan Rater, Tony Phelan, and Jerry Bruckheimer all on board as executive producers, the show would likely share a similar creative style to Fire Country. However, even if the project is approved, it’s not expected to air until the 2027-28 television season at the earliest.

Having more episodes gives the show some breathing room. Sheriff Country, featuring Morena Baccarin, has been picked up for another season, and Fire Country is starting its fifth. Instead of quickly releasing several spin-offs with the same basic idea, CBS seems to be expanding the Fire Country world into different types of shows. This is a more strategic approach that can prevent the universe from becoming stale and losing viewers.

This could also explain why the potential spin-off starring Jared Padalecki, previously known as Fire Country: Surfside, hasn’t moved forward after being announced during Season 3. A medical drama offers CBS a more straightforward way to expand its programming, as it easily fits with the emergency situations already featured in these shows.
