Elden Ring became a massive hit, topping sales charts and winning numerous Game of the Year awards, thanks to its challenging and immersive dark fantasy world filled with dangerous enemies. Its success wasn’t just about difficult gameplay; the game created a uniquely rich atmosphere and told its story in a non-traditional way. Adapting this experience into a movie is incredibly difficult because the game’s story unfolds through player exploration and discovery, not through typical narrative structures. However, A24 is currently working on a film adaptation that aims to bring the world of Elden Ring to life on the big screen.
Bandai Namco has announced that a movie adaptation of Elden Ring is planned for release in 2028, and it will be filmed specifically for IMAX. This shows the studio wants to recreate the game’s massive and impressive visuals, and they have faith in director Alex Garland’s approach to justify the cost of using this advanced technology. The movie will feature a large and well-known cast, including Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, Nick Offerman, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz. However, details about who will play which characters haven’t been revealed yet, so the story remains a mystery.
We Still Don’t Know What the Elden Ring Movie Is About

The story of Elden Ring isn’t presented directly; instead, it’s revealed through bits and pieces of history scattered across hundreds of years of rich mythology. Players have to uncover the tragic story by reading short descriptions of items and figuring out the meaning of vague conversations with characters they find throughout the crumbling world. This method creates a complicated story of gods, families, and betrayals, along with deep ideas about wanting power and how power always seems to repeat itself – and it all truly comes together as you play the game.
Most Hollywood directors would struggle to adapt this complex story into a movie, as condensing a 100-hour game into a typical film length would likely fall short. However, director Alex Garland is a dedicated fan of the game, having spent hundreds of hours playing it. He wasn’t just interested in making a movie; he proactively pitched his vision for an Elden Ring film to the game’s creators, FromSoftware, and even convinced the original creator, Hidetaka Miyazaki, to support it. Having Miyazaki’s approval is a huge advantage, as it means the movie will be guided by someone who deeply understands the game’s strengths and challenges.
Considering the talent involved and how the movie is being developed, it’s improbable that the film will simply retell the game’s story of a single hero defeating bosses one after another. Instead, the script will likely focus on a major event from the game’s rich history, like the devastating Shattering War or the Night of the Black Knives. Or, the filmmakers could create a completely new story within the world of the Lands Between. Both approaches would allow for a fantastic film that works well as a linear story, while still capturing the unique and mysterious feel of the original game.
Elden Ring is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 3, 2028.
