Jason Statham’s 2024 action hit, which earned $162 million, was a standout in his recent filmography, but the upcoming sequel promises to be even more over-the-top and exciting. Throughout his career, Statham’s movies have had varying degrees of success. Generally, his more serious roles haven’t resonated with audiences as much as his intentionally over-the-top and fun action films. Movies like Crank (2006) and F9 (2021) consistently rank among his best, while projects like Revolver (2005) and Blitz (2011) are often forgotten.
Jason Statham shines in movies that don’t take themselves too seriously, and his recent film, The Beekeeper, proved that, becoming both a critical and commercial hit. Directed by David Ayer, who also made Training Day, the movie features Statham as a seemingly ordinary beekeeper. When an elderly friend is tragically scammed out of her life savings, he reveals a hidden side: he’s part of a top-secret group known as the Beekeepers, an organization dedicated to protecting the US – often through extreme violence.
Jason Statham’s Sequel The Beekeeper 2 Sounds Absurd (And Absurdly Fun)

The rest of The Beekeeper’s wildly fun story follows Jason Statham’s character as he battles a conspiracy involving a wealthy tech entrepreneur (Josh Hutcherson), his scheming mother, and various government agencies – plus, of course, the mysterious Beekeepers. The first film was a surprising critical and commercial success, largely due to its playful, self-deprecating humor. And based on early reactions to footage shown at CinemaCon, the upcoming sequel, The Beekeeper 2, promises to be just as over-the-top.
Online reactions to The Beekeeper 2 suggest the film features beekeepers attempting to seize control of the U.S. government. One scene shows Jason Statham’s character using a flamethrower on an enemy, then making a pun about them being “so hot-headed.” The movie also includes a bizarre moment where Statham sports a beard made of bees, and hints that the bees can heal him, seemingly to explain his incredible toughness. If all of this sounds ridiculous, it’s because it is.
This isn’t necessarily a negative for The Beekeeper 2; in fact, it could be exactly what the sequel needs. Audience reactions suggest the film will deliver the over-the-top, action-packed fun of Jason Statham’s earlier movies like Crank: High Voltage, which is a promising sign for the franchise. Statham’s career over the past twenty years proves he shines when his films embrace a bit of absurdity.
Statham’s Action Movies Are At Their Best When They’re A Little Crazy

Jason Statham built his career on action movies, including The Transporter series and The Meg films, and he’s always been happy to star in projects that are knowingly over-the-top. Given his serious, stoic on-screen presence, it’s fitting that he often chooses lighter, more playful roles. So, the announcement that The Beekeeper 2 will embrace the original’s wildness is great news – the franchise could have easily failed by trying to be too serious.
