Fans of the show Torchwood are saddened by the removal of a memorial dedicated to the popular character Ianto Jones, but some believe this change may signal exciting new developments to come.
Fans of the Doctor Who series created a shrine to remember Ianto Jones, a beloved LGBTQ+ character known for his relationship with Jack Harkness. The shrine was built after his character was killed off in the show in 2009.
However, it was recently discovered that the monument – situated in Cardiff Bay, where the TV show Torchwood was based – was removed because of safety concerns.
The post was accompanied by photos of fans standing in front of the shrine.

Torchwood, starring Captain Jack Harkness and a team dedicated to defending Earth from alien threats, ran from 2006 to 2011 and gained a dedicated fanbase within the science fiction community.
Ianto appeared in the first episode of the show and gradually became a more important character, eventually becoming Captain Jack’s romantic partner. Sadly, his character was killed off during the ‘Children of Earth’ storyline.
Fans were quick to praise the pair as a refreshing example of positive LGBTQ+ relationships.
David-Lloyd recently shared with TopMob that his storyline has deeply resonated with viewers, explaining that he’s had several moving encounters with fans who were visibly emotional when meeting him.
He explained that many viewers told him Jack and Ianto’s relationship helped them accept their own identities and come out to their families. He believes this is a major reason why Ianto remains so popular, as seeing such a relationship prominently featured on a mainstream TV show was empowering for many.
He explained that the show featured a relationship that was unusual for primetime television at the time. He believes this uniqueness resonated with viewers, creating a deep, personal connection because it felt relevant to their own lives.
I believe that’s why the shrine has lasted so long, and why people still remember and care about Ianto.
