As a movie and collectible lover, I can only imagine the thrill! This guy, Andrew Braund, was cleaning out his attic and struck gold – he found some seriously rare Pokémon cards. It’s amazing to think Pokémon is already celebrating its 30th anniversary this year – it all started with those original Game Boy games in Japan back in ’96. The franchise has just exploded since then, and finding the really rare cards feels almost impossible these days… unless you get incredibly lucky like Andrew and discover a hidden treasure in your attic!
Andrew Braund, a teaching assistant and former Pokémon collector, recently discovered a valuable treasure while cleaning out his childhood attic. He took his old Pokémon card collection to a friend’s shop, hoping to earn around £500 ($673). Instead, he found three incredibly rare Charizard cards! Initially valued at $20,000, the cards ultimately sold for $41,000 at Ewbank’s Auctions. Braund and his fiancée, Rachel Moseley, plan to use the money to fund their wedding.
Why Were These Pokémon Cards Worth So Much?

Braund made the money through just three cards:
- A mint-condition Skyridge Charizard Holo Pokémon, which broke an auction record after selling for $21,250.
- A near-mind copy of the same card sold for $16,250.
- A Reverse-Holo Charizard cardsold for $3,500.
As a long-time Pokémon collector, I can tell you Charizard is the one. He’s become the symbol of the hobby, and honestly, getting a Charizard card is always a challenge – they’re consistently the hardest to find in any new release. That combination of being so popular and rare is what makes high-quality Charizard cards sell for so much. While values for other cards can jump around, Charizard’s value stays strong, and a lot of us see him as the backbone of the entire card market. Honestly, that discovery of his card all those years ago was a game-changer!
It’s funny to picture Braund bringing a dusty collection to a friend’s shop, hoping to earn a few hundred pounds. The collection was messy and he didn’t even know what was inside, so his friend was probably pretty surprised! “I don’t have to worry about wedding costs anymore,” Braund said. “When I was collecting these cards, no one imagined Pokémon would still be popular after 25 years. I just got really lucky.”
He remembers being a huge Pokémon card fan when he was growing up. They were even banned at his boarding school for a while! When the ban was lifted, everyone immediately took their cards out. Interestingly, his three most valuable Charizard cards came from some of the last packs he ever bought, but he doesn’t feel a strong emotional connection to them. He treasures the older, worn cards he carried around with him as a child much more.
