Superheroes capture our imaginations and offer a vision of what’s possible. From the beginning, figures like Superman have been presented as forward-thinking, embodying the promise of a better future. But superheroes do more than just solve immediate problems; they strive to make the world a better place and encourage us to be our best selves. While not everyone can perform extraordinary feats, everyone can contribute to positive change through kindness and by using their unique abilities. However, superhero stories often get stuck in a cycle of conflict, with heroes constantly battling challenges without ever truly achieving lasting peace.
We do occasionally get a peek at what the future might hold. Time travel is common in superhero stories, and DC Comics has explored many potential futures through its concept of Hypertime. These futures often feature unique superhero teams. Today, we’ll be looking at five of the best DC superhero teams from the distant future. Each team represents a possible path for our present, and they’re all entertaining in their own way. So, let’s jump forward in time and meet the descendants of today’s heroes!
5) Legion of Substitute Heroes

The Legion of Super-Heroes are the universe’s protectors in the 31st century, but the Substitute Legion is a different story. This group was formed by aspiring heroes who weren’t skilled enough to join the real Legion, but still wanted to make a difference. Considering the Legion is known for accepting heroes with questionable abilities, the Substitute Legion’s members are truly powerless. They constantly redefine what it means to have weak powers, yet they surprisingly manage to be helpful sometimes. They’re the most amusing team from the future, and a sight that often elicits a groan.
4) Time Masters

Rip Hunter leads the Time Masters, a team dedicated to protecting the timeline and preventing terrible futures. They don’t have a permanent headquarters, instead traveling to any point in time where they’re needed. Eventually, they established a base of operations, which will be mentioned later. As DC’s original time-traveling team, the Time Masters jump through history, either warning people to prevent disasters or stopping others who are messing with time. They’re the go-to group when the timeline is threatened, and their approach has proven effective over the years.
3) Linear Men

The Linear Men represent Rip Hunter and Matthew Ryder’s second attempt at creating a time-traveling team, but this time with a different approach. Instead of simply following the usual formula, they assembled a group of scientists dedicated to observing the entire timeline – from the beginning to the end of the universe. Their mission was both to safeguard the timestream and to understand its inner workings. While similar to the Time Masters in purpose, the Linear Men stand out due to their unique headquarters: the Vanishing Point. This metaphysical realm exists in the final moments of the universe, right before its end, and it’s a truly imaginative concept that earns them a spot as number three on the list.
2) Justice Legion

In the 853rd Century, a million months after the first superheroes appeared, the Justice Legion safeguards the entire universe. This group draws inspiration from the legendary Justice League and Legion of Super-Heroes, and has at least twenty-six different divisions spread throughout the stars. The main and most powerful branch is Justice Legion Alpha, modeled after the original Justice League, and featuring heroes connected to those classic members. They protect a solar system that has become a perfect society, beyond anything we can currently envision. This team is remarkably creative, blending familiar ideas with exciting new concepts, offering a hopeful vision for the future if we continue to make positive choices.
1) Legion of Super-Heroes

When it comes to teams focused on the future, the Legion stands alone as the very best. As DC’s first team set in the future, they perfectly capture the hope and excitement of what tomorrow could hold. Inspired by Superman and Supergirl, the Legion champions the idea that people from all walks of life can come together and build a unified world. They embody the ultimate optimistic future – one where things consistently get better. Plus, with a huge and diverse cast of fun and unique characters, the Legion is a truly special team, representing the best of what’s to come.
