Dragon Ball Super Exec Explains Why New Anime Remake Was Needed

During the celebration of Dragon Ball‘s 40th anniversary, it was revealed that Dragon Ball Super will continue with a new story arc based on the manga’s Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc. Excitingly, a remake of the Battle of Gods arc—the story that launched Dragon Ball Super—is also in the works. While fans enjoyed the continuation of the manga arc, the remake announcement sparked some debate about its necessity. Akio Iyoku, who manages Akira Toriyama’s work, explained the reasoning behind creating the remake.

The recent Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2026 event featured a statement from Akio explaining the reason behind the Dragon Ball Super anime remake, and it matches what many fans expected. He stated that this updated version of the original Super series is designed to more faithfully showcase Akira Toriyama’s work. Akio also pointed out that it’s been over a decade since Dragon Ball Super first aired, and advancements in animation technology make this remake possible and desirable. His statement also included other encouraging news.

Dragon Ball Super Exec Also Promises New Cuts for This Remake

Akio also explained that the new anime version includes newly added scenes. He pointed out several improvements in the remake, such as enhanced artwork, completely re-rendered footage, and a rebuilt storyline. He finished by saying that the first part of the series will introduce the Gods of Destruction, starting with Beerus from Universe 7. The team is working hard to visually showcase Beerus’s incredible power and presence using the latest animation technology, ensuring a fully immersive experience for viewers.

Akio’s comments are encouraging, particularly his focus on story revisions and fresh edits. While it’s unclear exactly what these changes will entail, they could lead to a better flow and potentially establish Dragon Ball Daima as officially part of the series’ timeline. However, the core story won’t be altered significantly. The new trailer shows that Dragon Ball Super: Beerus won’t conclude with the fight between Goku and Beerus, but will continue directly into the next story arc, Resurrection of Frieza.

The recently released trailer for the remake also suggests that Frieza will appear, giving fans another look at Golden Frieza with updated animation. This likely means the new anime series will be longer than 24 episodes, probably continuing into at least spring 2027 after its fall release. Based on information from a Dragon Ball Super executive and the trailer, Super is still a key part of the franchise’s future. This retelling will prepare fans for the next story arc, which is planned for next year, and may give clues about where the series is going.
