James Gunn’s first DC Universe movie, Supergirl, will introduce five members of Superman’s family when it releases on June 26, 2026. Milly Alcock will star as Kara Zor-El, and David Corenswet will play her cousin, Superman (Kal-El). The film will explore the history of Krypton and lay the foundation for the Super-Family, essentially rebooting the previous DC movie universe’s version of these characters.
Ultimately, the movie Supergirl centers around the legacy of the House of El and the sacrifices made to endure. Unlike Superman, Supergirl remembers the destruction of Krypton, and director James Gunn has promised to reveal a previously unseen side of their home world.
The story of Supergirl goes beyond just Kara’s Kryptonian heritage. The show’s premise centers around Kara teaming up with Eve Ridley’s character, Ruthye Marye Knoll, a determined young warrior whose father’s murder kicks off the main storyline.
Matthias Schoenaerts plays Krem of the Yellow Hills, a new take on the story’s villain, and Jason Momoa appears as Lobo, a unpredictable bounty hunter from outer space who enjoys a good cigar.
As a movie critic, I’m happy to report that when this superhero family hits the big screen this summer, we’re going to see a lot of them! Here’s a rundown of every family member confirmed to be making an appearance.
The Super-Family in Supergirl
Supergirl / Kara Zor-El

Alcock portrays a unique take on Supergirl, different from what we’ve seen in DC movies and TV shows. The latest trailer hints at the destruction of Argo City, showing Kara being forced to flee her home as its protective shield fails.
What really sets Kara apart, and it’s huge, is her backstory. While Clark lost his memories, Kara didn’t lose anything – she was actually forced to witness the deaths of everyone she loved. It’s a completely different kind of trauma, and it profoundly shapes who she is. It’s not just a missing past, it’s a brutally remembered one, and it makes all the difference.
The difficult experiences she’s faced have fundamentally shaped her character, and both James Gunn and director Craig Gillespie have openly acknowledged this. They, along with actress Milly Alcock, confirmed back in December, when the first trailer was released, that Supergirl isn’t a traditional hero – she’s an antihero.
Superman / Kal-El

The trailer for Supergirl immediately features David Corenswet, confirming his appearance. However, he’ll play a supporting character, not a main lead alongside the titular heroine.
The trailer begins with Clark Kent checking on Kara, offering support as she travels between planets. This brief conversation quickly establishes that Superman is urging her to connect with others like herself, and he appears concerned that she hasn’t yet.
Since the new film centers on Kara’s travels across the galaxy, Clark’s part will probably be limited to a brief appearance at the beginning and perhaps another near the end. David Corenswet, who plays Superman, will have a much larger role in the next Superman movie, currently planned for release in July 2027.
Zor-El

David Krumholtz will play Kara’s father, Zor-El, in flashbacks showing what life was like on Krypton. He hinted that the movie draws heavily from the graphic novel Woman of Tomorrow and will offer a deeper understanding of the El family’s history and values.
The movie closely follows the graphic novel, Woman of Tomorrow, which is fantastic. I’m excited to contribute to the ongoing story of Krypton and to explore the history and values of the El family.
Because Kara’s recollections of her father and home world are key to understanding her personality, even a short appearance by Zor-El is very important.
Alura In-Ze

Similar to Zor-El, Alura In-Ze (played by Emily Beecham) will mostly appear in scenes showing the past on Krypton, as her character’s destiny was determined when the planet was destroyed.
Beecham and Gillespie have worked together before, on the film Cruella, so it’s not surprising she’s joined the cast. While her role hasn’t been officially announced, it’s likely she’ll play an important and beloved character in Kara’s life – someone Kara will deeply miss.
Krypto

Okay, so Krypto isn’t just a cute sidekick in Supergirl – he’s actually central to everything that happens! They’ve released some new clips showing how Kara first met him way back on Krypton, and it’s really cool to see the start of their bond. It’s becoming clear he’s not just a super-dog, he’s the thing that kicks off the whole story.
The movie quickly turns that connection into a source of danger when Krypto is poisoned, giving Kara only three days to find a cure. It becomes obvious that Krypto isn’t just a pet – he’s Kara’s last remaining tie to her home planet and everything she’s lost.
It’s amusing to fans that Superman once had to save Krypto, Superdog, from Lex Luthor. It seems that poor pup can’t catch a break anywhere in the universe!
