Troy Baker, a popular voice actor in many well-known video games, wants to create his own games. He recently told Kinda Funny Games that he’s hoping to apply what he’s learned from industry leaders like Neil Druckmann (Naughty Dog) and Hideo Kojima (Kojima Productions) to develop and share his own stories.
Baker explained he wants to use everything he’s learned – both the successes and failures – to create something fresh. He’s eager to share his own stories and combine the wisdom he’s gained from other studios with new ideas. His goal is to build a team of trusted collaborators and ask them to help refine his vision, ultimately building a new studio.
Baker admitted it won’t be easy, but he’s not feeling pressured to start making his own games immediately. He’s seen others jump into things too quickly and wants to take his time to do it properly. He explained that if he’s going to start a studio and be responsible for other people’s livelihoods, he needs to make well-considered decisions.
Baker elaborated in a Eurogamer interview, noting that Abubakar Salim, who voiced Bayek in Assassin’s Creed Origins, followed a comparable path. Salim established his own studio, Surgent Studios, and subsequently released Tales of Kenzera: Zau.
Baker shared his admiration for Abu, saying he thoroughly enjoyed playing his games. He praised Abu’s dedication to gaming and his success in building a business around it. Baker also expressed his gratitude for the chance to collaborate with industry leaders like Ken Levine, Hideo Kojima, Neil Druckmann, Todd Howard, and Vince Zampella, emphasizing how much he’s learned from them. He described working with these individuals as an incredible and inspiring experience.
I’m really excited to apply the lessons learned from hugely successful stories – not just in terms of sales, but also their lasting impact on the industry – to my own creative work. I want to understand what made those stories work so well and use those techniques to create something new.
As a gamer, I’ve definitely heard Troy Baker’s voice in a ton of stuff, even if I didn’t always realize it was him! He’s been super busy. Recently, I recognized him as Higgs in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. But he’s always working! I also heard him as Jack Pepper in Mouse: P.I. for Hire and Mr. A in Screamer. It’s not just games either – he even voiced Timmy Timtim on Rick and Morty, and he was David in that Iron Lung movie – pretty cool, right?
