The Osmonds are mourning the loss of one of their own.
Alan Osmond, the oldest of the famous Osmond brothers who rose to fame as a barbershop quartet in the 1970s, passed away on April 20th at the age of 76, his family announced.
It breaks my heart to share that my brother, Alan Osmond, has passed away. I was so thankful I got to be with him near the end and share one last special moment. He was such a talented and creative person, a man who lived his faith, and someone who just filled the lives of everyone he knew with so much love. He will be deeply missed.
I’ve been a fan of the Osmonds for years, and it’s always fascinating to learn more about them. Alan Osmond, born in 1949 to George and Olive, was originally the oldest of the singing brothers. Along with Merrill and Jay, he formed the core of the group. It was so sad to hear about Wayne passing away last year at 73 – he was a big part of their sound too.
As the group developed its sound, Donny Osmond, 68, and Jimmy Osmond, 63, later joined. The Osmond family also includes Virl Osmond, 80, Tom Osmond, 78, and Marie Osmond, 68, but they weren’t part of the performing band.
The Osmonds were a popular family act from 1971 to 1975, and later moved into country music in the 1980s. However, in 1987, Alan Osmond stepped away from public life after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
In his final days, Merrill detailed how Alan honored their family’s musical legacy.
I’ll never forget a sweet moment he shared with me. He leaned in and whispered, ‘Merrill, we worked together, side by side. We created, produced, and directed… we poured our hearts into The Plan with Wayne. Please… do something with it. Make sure people understand our message.’ I promise to fulfill his wish.

As a lifestyle expert, I always admire those who balance a successful career with a fulfilling family life, and Alan Osmond certainly did both. Beyond his incredible music, he built a beautiful family with his wife, Suzanne Pinegar Osmond, whom he was with for over 50 years. Together, they had eight sons, and their family has grown to include 30 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren – a truly wonderful legacy!
In his heartfelt tribute, Merrill highlighted not only his brother’s musical gifts, but also the positive influence he had on all who knew him.
I was so moved by a recent post about him. It wasn’t about how long he lived, but about how fully he lived – with so much love, selflessness, and a real sense of what mattered. He wasn’t just a believer; his creativity and deep understanding of the Savior’s teachings were woven into everything he did. He truly embodied those teachings, felt them deeply, and shared them with everyone. He asked me to let you all know how much he loved each of you, and I honestly believe that love will continue to reach you, even now.
