Mariah Carey isn’t pining over a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame fantasy.
Following her third exclusion from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the singer of “Fantasy” stated firmly in a TMZ interview on April 20th that she wasn’t bothered by it, simply saying, “No.”
“Who cares?” Mariah continued. “Give it to someone else. Fantastic.”
Despite fans strongly protesting her absence from this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class – which included artists like Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Oasis, and Wu-Tang Clan – the 57-year-old artist said she’s not upset about missing the November induction ceremony.
Still, she was grateful her Lambily was stepping up for her, adding, “I love my fans always.”
Mariah’s fans are understandably disappointed that she didn’t win after her recent nomination. She wasn’t the only one – Pink and Lauryn Hill also didn’t win this year. While Mariah has been nominated five times, including in 2021 and 2023, she hasn’t yet been recognized with a win.
Despite a hugely successful 30-year career with 19 number one hits, numerous awards, and being known as the ‘Queen of Christmas,’ Mariah Carey—who has 14-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, with her ex-husband Nick Cannon—remains humble and doesn’t consider herself above anyone in the music industry.
In a recent interview with Billboard, she modestly dismissed the idea of being a ‘legend,’ saying she’s simply focused on continuing to work hard and improve.

And that’s what Mariah has always aimed to do.
She explained that she’s always been a dedicated worker, driven by her desire to build a lasting career. The most important thing she’s learned is to stay true to who you are, and she feels lucky to have been able to do that. While there were challenges along the way, she’s proud to have reached this point.
For a deeper look into Mariah’s inner world, keep reading…

Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970, to Alfred Roy Carey and Patricia Hickey. Her mother faced disapproval from her own family for marrying a man of African-American and Afro-Venezuelan heritage. Mariah’s parents divorced when she was three years old.
Her name, Maria, is inspired by a song from the 1951 Broadway musical Paint Your Wagon – “They Call the Wind Maria.” While the spelling differs, the pronunciation is identical.
Growing up, her family—including her two older siblings—faced racist attacks due to her parents being in an interracial marriage. These attacks included the poisoning of their dogs and the destruction of their car with an explosion.
Patricia described a terrifying experience during a 1999 interview with Oprah Winfrey and her daughter. She recalled a night when someone shot a bullet through their window while they were eating dinner. Thankfully, none of the children were hurt because they weren’t in the room at the time.

Let me tell you, even back in high school at Harborfields in Greenlawn, New York, Mariah had a bit of a free spirit! She was known as ‘Mirage’ because, well, she wasn’t always in class. I’ve read Marc Shapiro’s biography, and apparently, her skipping school was a real concern for her guidance counselor, John Garvey. It just goes to show you, even superstars have a rebellious streak!
Garvey explained that no amount of talking could change her mind. She’d consistently dismiss concerns, stating her priority was becoming a rock star. Carey responded by saying she understood why people tried to motivate her academically, as they hadn’t witnessed her singing talent.
During the recording of her album Music Box, Mariah Carey began a relationship with Tommy Mottola, the head of Columbia Records. They married in a grand ceremony on June 5, 1993, but separated in 1997. Carey later explained that his controlling behavior and disagreements over her music were the main reasons for the split.
In her reality show, Mariah’s World, Carey discussed a past relationship where she felt very controlled. She described being with someone much older and powerful who isolated her from friends and family. She even needed his permission to leave the house and felt trapped, unsure if she’d ever escape the situation.

Mariah Carey wrote her very first song, “Here We Go ‘Round Again,” while she was in high school. She’s said the song, which appeared on a four-song demo she made, has a classic Motown sound.
After high school, she moved to Manhattan and shared a small one-bedroom apartment with four other women. She juggled working as a waitress and coat check with her cosmetology studies, all while working towards her goal of becoming a musician.
Even as a toddler, Mariah Carey showed incredible musical talent. By age 2, she amazed her mother – who was a vocal coach and sometimes sang opera – by perfectly copying her operatic style. She started formal singing lessons at 4 years old and developed a voice with an extraordinary range of five octaves.

After meeting up-and-coming singer Brenda K. Starr, Mariah Carey went with her to a CBS Records Christmas party. Starr encouraged her to share her demo tape, which eventually reached Tommy Mottola, the head of Columbia Records. Mottola was so impressed after hearing just two songs that he immediately offered her a record deal.
Carey released her first album, simply titled ‘Carey,’ on June 12, 1990. It was a huge success, earning her two Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist. She became the first artist since The Jackson 5 to have the first four songs from an album all reach the top of the charts.
Mariah Carey has always admired Marilyn Monroe. In 1999, she spent over $600,000 to buy Monroe’s white baby grand piano at a Christie’s auction.

Mariah Carey met Nick Cannon while filming her “Bye Bye” music video in 2008, and they quickly began dating. Just two months later, on April 30th, they had a private wedding ceremony in the Bahamas. The couple separated in 2014.
Despite experiencing a miscarriage early in their marriage, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon had twins in 2011: Moroccan and Monroe. Monroe was named after Marilyn Monroe, who Carey admired, and Moroccan was named after the Moroccan-themed decor of the room where Cannon proposed.
In 2008, Mariah Carey faced criticism after performing at a New Year’s Eve concert for the family of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. She later expressed regret for participating in the event, stating she felt “horrible and embarrassed.” Her representative, Cindi Berger, announced in March 2011 that proceeds from Carey’s song “Save The Day” would be donated to human rights charities. The song was ultimately released in 2020.

In 2001, she had a very unusual and unexpected appearance on the show TRL. She arrived without warning, wheeled in an ice cream cart, and removed her clothing. Following this incident, she spent two weeks in a Connecticut mental hospital, explaining that she was suffering from severe exhaustion.
In 2018, she publicly shared that she had been diagnosed with bipolar II disorder, something she had previously kept private. She told People magazine that she was finally comfortable talking about her mental health journey and hoped to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. She emphasized that a diagnosis doesn’t have to control your life, and she refused to let it control hers, noting how isolating these struggles can be when faced alone.
Only a few months after leaving the hospital, Mariah Carey released the movie Glitter. Unfortunately, both the film and its soundtrack failed commercially. This led Virgin Records to pay her $50 million to end their contract. In early 2002, she then signed with Island Records and started her own record label, MonarC.
While Glitter might be well-known, Mariah Carey has also received critical acclaim for her acting roles. She earned praise for her performance as a social worker in her friend Lee Daniels’ 2009 film, Precious. In 2013, she reunited with Daniels for The Butler, where she played the mother of the main character, Cecil Gaines (played by Forest Whitaker).

As a music and pop culture enthusiast, I remember when Mariah Carey’s “One Sweet Day,” featuring Boyz II Men, absolutely dominated the charts! For years – until 2017, actually – it held the record for the longest-running number one hit, staying at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for an incredible 16 weeks back in ’95 and ’96. It was tied with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” (the version with Justin Bieber, of course) for a while, but then Lil Nas X came along with “Old Town Road” in the summer of 2019 and took the crown. Still, “One Sweet Day” remains a truly iconic song!
Mariah Carey’s two Jack Russell terriers travel in ultimate luxury – first class, each with their own dedicated attendant. The reason? They reportedly can’t stand being near each other!
After experiencing a career comeback with her 2005 album, The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey started doing endorsement deals for the first time. She began with commercials for Intel Centrino computers. In 2006, she signed on with Gillette’s “Legs of a Goddess” campaign and reportedly insured her legs for $1 billion.

Carey met Australian businessman James Packer through a mutual friend, director Brett Ratner, at a movie premiere in Aspen, Colorado, and they got engaged in January 2016.
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this! He proposed with a 35-carat ring – a 35-carat ring! – to her, after they started that production company together. But then, just a few months later, it was over. And the worst part? They both basically blamed each other for the whole thing! It’s like, he thought she was the problem, and she thought he was! It’s so messy, but I’m still obsessed with all the details!

Mariah Carey’s 1994 album, Merry Christmas, is the best-selling Christmas album ever, with over 18 million copies sold worldwide. Remarkably, 25 years after its release, her song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in late December 2019. This broke several records, including the longest climb to number one. The song also extended Carey’s record as the solo artist with the most number-one hits and made her the first artist ever to have a top song in four different decades.
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this! Did you know that Brandy’s godmother is the legendary Patti LaBelle?! And get this – Patti herself has said she used to playfully spank Brandy when she was little! I mean, can you even imagine being corrected by Patti LaBelle?! It’s amazing and a little shocking, but honestly, it just makes me love them both even more. It’s just…iconic!

Following her split from Nick Cannon, Mariah Carey soon began dating backup dancer Bryan Tanaka, and their developing romance was filmed for her reality show, Mariah’s World.
25. She does not know Jennifer Lopez. So stop asking her.
