Ubisoft Cancels Animal Crossing Competitor After 3 Years in Development

In 2024, Ubisoft revealed they were working on a life simulation game similar to Nintendo’s popular Animal Crossing. The game, initially called Alterra, was planned to let players socialize with both computer-controlled characters and other players online. Unfortunately, Ubisoft has now cancelled the project. This means fans hoping Ubisoft might offer a new game in the style of Animal Crossing while waiting for Nintendo’s next release will have to look elsewhere.

According to a report from Insider Gaming on April 21st, Ubisoft has cancelled the game Alterra. This is the seventh game Ubisoft has cancelled this year, following an earlier announcement in January that six projects were scrapped. The reason for the cancellation isn’t currently known, but it means one fewer game like Animal Crossing will be released.

Animal Crossing-Inspired Project Alterra Scrapped by Ubisoft

Although Alterra was announced in 2024, very few details about the game were ever revealed. It was planned as a social simulation game similar to Animal Crossing, with building elements inspired by Minecraft. We only saw a few early images showing its blocky art style and character designs reminiscent of Funko Pop figures. According to Insider Gaming, the project was in development for three years before Ubisoft cancelled it. Considering how little information was shared during that time, it’s hard to say how much progress had actually been made.

The game’s concept is reminiscent of the popular Pokemon Pokopia, another competitor to Animal Crossing. Given Pokopia‘s success and the mixed reaction to the 3.0 update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Ubisoft may have decided the time wasn’t right to launch their game. Several Animal Crossing alternatives have been released since this project was first announced, and most haven’t managed to replicate New Horizons‘ popularity. Currently, Ubisoft hasn’t explained publicly why they cancelled Alterra.

The good news is that Ubisoft isn’t planning any layoffs as a result of the recently cancelled project. Employees are expected to be reassigned to other games currently in development. However, given the number of games Ubisoft has cancelled or postponed, the future remains uncertain for the teams who worked on this particular project.

Good news for fans of Ubisoft: the remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, which has been rumored for a while, will be officially announced on April 23rd. Ubisoft confirmed the project on X (formerly Twitter). Hopefully, this remake of a popular game will be a hit and help the company get back on track with its other projects, avoiding further cancellations.
