Venom is about to get even more dangerous with its newest host. While I’m not the biggest Venom enthusiast, I recognize the symbiote has bonded with some incredibly powerful individuals throughout the years – Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Wolverine, and even Deadpool, as I recall. It’s easy to see why Venom is so popular. The symbiote transforms ordinary people into powerful, monstrous beings, and if the host already has abilities, Venom simply adds to them.
It’s natural to question just how much control Venom can actually exert over its hosts. While the symbiote is undeniably strong, can it corrupt even the most powerful heroes? It seems likely there’s no limit to what it can control, considering the number of people it’s already bonded with. But what would happen if Venom possessed the absolute strongest hero, not just in the Marvel Universe, but in all of comics? Fortunately, the new Marvel and DC crossover event provides an answer to that very question.
Venom Just Took Control of Superman (And You Need to See the Result)

In the first issue of the Marvel/DC: Spider-Man/Superman crossover, titled “Our Kryptonite” and created by Brad Meltzer, Pepe Larraz, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles, Spider-Man and Superman find themselves in a dangerous situation. Lex Luthor and the Green Goblin have joined forces to defeat them, trapping the heroes inside a cave. The situation worsens when a pumpkin bomb from the Green Goblin falls into the cave and, instead of exploding, exposes Superman to kryptonite radiation, hinting at a larger, more malicious plan. As Superman’s powers begin to fade, Spider-Man desperately tries to rescue them both, but the task seems nearly impossible.
It was heartbreaking watching Clark desperately try to get Peter to just leave, but Spider-Man was determined to hold up the collapsing ceiling. They started talking, just trying to distract him – and honestly, keep both of them from panicking – but the more Clark was exposed to whatever was going on down there, the worse things got. The whole cavern started… changing, becoming all liquid and gross. Then it hit me – Spider-Man figured it out right as a pumpkin bomb reached full power. It wasn’t about killing Superman at all! Luthor and the Green Goblin weren’t trying to kill him, they were setting him up to become the next host for the Venom symbiote. It was a setup, a truly twisted one.
The plan succeeds, and a Venom with Superman’s powers erupts from the ground. Spider-Man fights to restrain Venom, but with Superman’s abilities added in, he can only do so much. He manages to destroy a pumpkin bomb and its radiation, giving Superman a chance to start burning away the symbiote with his heat vision. As Superman prepares a powerful sonic clap, the symbiote desperately calls out to Luthor and the Goblin for help. The clap shatters the symbiote, freeing Superman, and allowing both heroes to capture their enemies.
Venom as Superman is Too Powerful an Idea to Last

I was completely surprised to see Venom take over Superman! It’s such a clever concept, and despite all the recent Marvel/DC crossovers, it never occurred to me. As a big Superman fan, I should have disliked the idea of him being weakened by a symbiote, but the story did a good job of explaining it with kryptonite. Superman has been controlled by evil forces before, but this storyline felt too brief.
It’s understandable this team-up won’t last – crossovers are usually temporary. Giving a dangerous being like Venom access to Superman’s abilities is just too risky. Superman is incredibly powerful, and Venom influencing him could lead to disastrous consequences. It’s a shame, actually, because the idea of Venom possessing Superman has a lot of potential. Imagine the chaos Venom could cause with Superman’s body, even for a short time. While the symbiote has bonded with strong hosts before, none have been as powerful as the Man of Steel.
I found this quite enjoyable. Even though it was brief, the pairing was really interesting, and could have been fantastic in a longer story. As it stands, it’s a fun look at the unique possibilities that come with crossovers – like when you were a kid, mixing your toys to create something incredibly powerful and silly. Seeing Venom and Superman combined is cool, but given how strong they became, it’s probably a good thing the combination didn’t last.
