It feels like a different world looking back at how people used to experience Star Wars. Today, we can easily stream the newest movies and shows – like Maul – Shadow Lord on Disney+ or The Mandalorian and Grogu when it comes out on May 22nd. But when Star Wars first launched, even owning a movie on VHS was a big deal. The first film wasn’t available on VHS until 1982, and it was expensive, costing between $40 and $80. In fact, a brand new, sealed copy from that year recently sold for an incredible $114,000!
According to Reddit, a sealed copy of the 1984 edition of a collectible item was recently discovered in a foreclosed home. While not as rare as a similar item sold in 2022, it’s still a valuable find. Copies often sell for around $200, and some online auctions are seeing even higher bids. This is a remarkably well-preserved piece of Star Wars history, and it’s great to see it in such good condition.
Found in a foreclosed house, is it real?

The Past Really is a Different Country

This isn’t the Star Wars you’re used to seeing on Disney+. George Lucas made many changes – some were even debated by fans – when he released the Special Editions, like adding Jabba the Hutt and altering the famous Han Solo and Greedo scene. However, this version is even older – it’s from before those changes, making it a version that isn’t currently available. In fact, Lucas actively tried to prevent this particular cut of the film from circulating.
It’s not the very first version of Star Wars that will be back in cinemas next year for the film’s 50th anniversary. George Lucas actually made small changes to the original while it was still playing in theaters, and later added the “Episode IV” title before releasing The Empire Strikes Back. This original cut was believed to be lost, but a copy was found last year at the British Film Institute. Because it was first shown in the U.K., there’s a lot of anticipation for its return to the big screen.
Even so, this is a significant piece of Star Wars memorabilia. Its very existence shows how the franchise has changed over the years, and it’s wonderful to see a rare, unopened copy – meaning it’s in perfect condition. The person who found it plans to have it professionally assessed before selling it, according to a Reddit post. While it won’t be as valuable as the 1982 version, it’s still expected to be a fantastic discovery.
