Man on Fire’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Reveals Difference in Netflix Series From Denzel Washington’s Movie [Exclusive]

After three years in the making, Netflix will release a fresh take on A.J. Quinnell’s novel, Man on Fire, next week. The story was previously adapted into films in 1987 with Scott Glenn and in 2004 starring Denzel Washington. This new series updates the story for today’s audiences and features Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, known for his roles in Marvel and DC films, as the lead. It arrives at a time when the 2004 Denzel Washington version is being re-examined, as it initially received negative reviews from critics.

In a recent interview with ComicBook, actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II discussed how Denzel Washington’s performance in ‘Man on Fire’ inspired his own work on the series. He called it one of his favorite films starring Washington. Abdul-Mateen II explained that he focused on building a strong foundation for his character, rather than comparing himself to previous portrayals. “I wanted to figure out what I loved about the role and what I wanted to bring to it,” he said. “When I’m being authentic and enjoying myself, and I feel successful, everyone benefits.”

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Details Influence of Denzel on Netflix Series

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II found it surprisingly fun to portray John Creasy’s situation with complete honesty. He realized Creasy was clearly out of his depth, and that awareness, combined with the challenge of fully embodying the character and driving the story forward, actually relieved any performance anxiety he might have felt. It was this internal journey, understanding Creasy’s unpreparedness, that made the role so engaging.

Okay, so Netflix is giving us another take on Man on Fire, and this time, the story jumps from Italy and Mexico City to the vibrant, and dangerous, streets of Rio de Janeiro. For those unfamiliar, the story centers around a tough ex-military guy protecting a young girl, and it’s been adapted before. What’s interesting about this series, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is they’ve tweaked John Creasy’s backstory. He’s now a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and honestly, Yahya told me that change resonated with him much more than trying to match up with Denzel Washington’s performance or the original book. It gave him a deeper connection to the character, and you can definitely feel that.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II focused on the deep loss in Creasy’s past as the key to understanding the character. He realized Creasy’s pain prevented him from forming close bonds, because he feared losing anyone else he cared about. Abdul-Mateen II connected with this universal feeling of loss and used it to ground his performance, portraying Creasy as someone struggling to rebuild his life and relationships after experiencing such trauma.

He explained that when developing the character of Creasy, he focused on a narrative about overcoming loss and the process of healing and rebuilding one’s life.

All seven episodes of Man on Fire will be released on Netflix on April 30, 2026.
