President Trump: “What the hell is NVIDIA? I’ve never heard of it before” — but is it right to dunk on him?

At a recent AI conference held in Washington D.C., President Trump talked about his strategy for AI. During this event, he praised key figures in the AI field and addressed some of the difficulties associated with creating and administering artificial intelligence technologies.

Trump expressed gratitude to several influential figures in the industry, among them being NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, whom he described as outstanding.

He later discussed potential actions the United States government could take relating to NVIDIA:

I had suggested, back then when I was less experienced, ‘Let’s divide this business apart.’ When they questioned the feasibility, I inquired why. Upon learning that the business controlled 100% of the market share, I was informed of the difficulty involved.

He later added:

I asked, ‘Who on earth is he? What’s his name?’ Someone replied, ‘His name is Jensen Huang from Nvidia.’ I’ve never come across Nvidia before, so I said, ‘What on earth is Nvidia?’

It struck me as an idea that perhaps we might enter the situation, and stir things up slightly, introducing a bit of healthy rivalry. However, I discovered that such competition isn’t always straightforward within this line of work.

Additionally, during the discussion, the president mentioned the challenge of keeping pace with NVIDIA. He shared that if Huang were to lead NVIDIA poorly for a full decade, his team of advisors suggested it could take them that long to match up.

NVIDIA experienced significant expansion, largely fueled by advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI). This year, it achieved the milestone of becoming the first company to reach a market capitalization of $4 trillion.

In 2022, when ChatGPT was introduced, it ignited a competitive race among artificial intelligence (AI) developers. A flurry of competing models followed suit, while various companies accelerated their efforts to incorporate AI within their goods and services.

NVIDIA’s worth significantly increased, reaching an impressive $2 trillion in February 2024, followed by a further escalation to $3 trillion in June 2024.

It appears that Microsoft is said to be NVIDIA’s biggest client, yet a variety of tech titans such as Google, Meta, and OpenAI also depend on NVIDIA’s hardware for their AI training and operation needs.

In reporting news, I strive to maintain a balanced and impartial approach. My goal is to deliver information accurately, devoid of any personal biases or editorializing. To ensure fairness, I find it essential to differentiate between sharing the actual quotes and context of President Trump’s statements and my own personal perspective on the matter.

It’s tempting to criticize President Trump for some of his past statements that have provided ample opportunity for satire or ridicule, like when he referred to Apple CEO Tim Cook as “Tim Apple.” However, I feel this exchange with Huang doesn’t warrant the same treatment.

In my observation, when Trump spoke about Jensen, it was clear that he had come to understand why this individual played such a significant role in the success of NVIDIA within the artificial intelligence sector.

In my view, President Trump used the occasion to share an engaging tale that commended Huang.

It seems to me that at certain moments, it would be helpful if President Trump made it explicit whether his statements are meant literally or figuratively. There are instances where I believe he has used humor or sarcasm to soften the impact of serious remarks, but this particular instance doesn’t appear to fit into that category in my opinion.
