Like many fans, we’ve been eagerly following the development of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, the sci-fi role-playing game from OwlCat Games.
Ever since its announcement, the game has strongly reminded people of Mass Effect with its third-person shooting and emphasis on choices that affect the story and characters. Early signs suggest it’s also developing into a really promising game.
First looks at the game Osiris Reborn are now available online, thanks to players who got early access to a demo on PC. While the full game won’t be released on PS5 until next year, initial reactions have been good.
Honestly, everything I’ve seen so far really nails the world they’ve created – it feels super immersive. And the characters you team up with? They’re not just window dressing; they’re actually well-written and feel like real people. I mean, I didn’t expect anything less from this developer, though. They’ve been making awesome, detailed RPGs for years now, so they clearly know what they’re doing.
Okay, so Osiris Reborn is a pretty big change for Owlcat. It’s the first time they’ve really tried a game that isn’t turn-based or strategy, and honestly, playing the demo, you can tell they’re still figuring out the whole third-person action thing. It’s not bad, but you can definitely see it’s new territory for them.
Early looks at the game suggest the shooting might feel a little loose and the cover system could be cumbersome. Interestingly, these are the same complaints that were made about the original Mass Effect.
The main advantage of Osiris Reborn is its ability to use player feedback to refine the combat and create a better experience before its release in 2027.
Despite some concerns, several reviewers have praised certain gameplay features. Specifically, the game’s environmental hazards add a lot of excitement to gunfights. Players can use abilities to damage buildings and change the battlefield, creating a more dynamic experience for themselves and their teammates.
What really shows the potential of Osiris Reborn is how much the story and its events shift depending on the decisions you make.
Even though this demo is just a small part of the full game, most previews have pointed out that playing it multiple times leads to significantly different storylines.
A closed beta demo is now available on PS5, but access is limited to those who have pre-ordered the more expensive editions of the game. You can find details on the developer’s website.
Here’s a round up of some choice quotes from the previews…

Osiris Reborn definitely grabs your attention right away, particularly if you’re looking for a particular type of science fiction roleplaying game.

This approach makes battles feel like they’re won through your decisions, not just predetermined events. It’s nice to see a game willing to let your choices have real consequences, which is something many recent RPGs avoid. While the demo only featured simple skill checks, the full game will likely require you to specialize, meaning you’ll have to make tough choices about what skills to prioritize, potentially missing out on valuable items or opportunities.
GamesRadar
It’s currently around a 7 out of 10, but it’s the kind of game you can easily lose yourself in for the full 30+ hours the developers estimate, without even noticing the time pass.

I’m a huge fan of games like Mass Effect and Owlcat’s RPGs, and the sci-fi series The Expanse, so I’m incredibly excited about this game! I almost wish I could fast-forward to its full release in Spring 2027. For now, though, we’ll have to be patient and enjoy this beta for another year.
Excited about The Expanse: Osiris Reborn? If you’re one of the lucky players trying the closed beta on PS5, let us know what you think! And please, keep the comments civil – no exploding space stations, please!
