A new movie about Michael Jackson is now playing in UK cinemas, telling the story of his life and career.
Before the movie came out, people had very different reactions to it. Some praised its telling of the iconic musician’s life story, while others focused on the serious allegations that had been made against him.
The film follows the singer’s journey to stardom, from when his talent was first noticed to his determined climb to become a global superstar.
Written by John Logan, known for films like ‘Gladiator’ and ‘Skyfall,’ and produced by Graham King, who brought us ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ this movie focuses on twenty years of the subject’s forty-year career. But how much of what you see actually happened?
Let’s take a closer look at the real story behind the film Michael, and explore key moments in his life and career.
Michael movie true story: How accurate is it?
As a film fan, I was immediately transported back in time with this Michael Jackson biopic – it starts in Gary, Indiana, in the 60s, showing us how the Jackson 5 – Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and young Michael – first came together. It’s amazing to see them practicing in their living room, the very beginning of their journey!
During the 1960s, the Jackson 5 performed extensively throughout the Midwest, frequently opening for established artists such as Gladys Knight and Etta James. They also played shows in clubs and lounges. In 1969, they signed with Motown Records, launching them to national fame.
Laura Harrier plays Suzanne de Passe, who was instrumental in getting Motown founder Berry Gordy to sign the group and also led the effort to shape their public image.
The Jackson 5’s song “I Want You Back” was their first to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and they continued their success with other number-one hits like “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There.”
In 1975, The Jackson 5 moved from Motown Records to Epic Records, and their brother Randy became a member. However, Jermaine Jackson stayed with Motown to focus on his own music. Michael also expressed interest in launching a solo career, making it clear he wasn’t the only Jackson sibling with those ambitions.
Michael Jackson released his album Off the Wall in 1979, featuring hits like “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough” and “Rock with You.” At the time, he was still performing with his family group, The Jacksons, and his father, Joseph, allowed him to work on the album as long as it didn’t conflict with their group activities.
The album was a massive success, selling over 20 million copies globally, and earned Michael Jackson a Grammy Award for his R&B vocal performance.

Michael Jackson reached a new level of stardom in 1982 with the release of Thriller, which became the best-selling album ever. The album featured popular songs like “Billie Jean” and “Beat It.”
Michael Jackson’s performance of “Billie Jean” at the Motown 25 concert is famous for being the first time he did the moonwalk, a dance move that quickly became his trademark.
Michael Jackson’s breakthrough success earned him the title “King of Pop.” In 1984, he received a record-breaking 12 Grammy Award nominations in one night, winning eight of them.
After achieving success as a solo artist, Joe Jackson hoped his brothers would come back together. They ended up working with PepsiCo on a promotion, and a reworked version of the song ‘Billie Jean’ was used in their advertising jingle.
During the filming of a Pepsi commercial in January 1984, Michael Jackson’s hair accidentally caught fire, causing second-degree burns to his head. He received a $1.5 million settlement as a result and generously donated the entire amount to Brotman Memorial Hospital, where he received treatment.
As a huge fan of the Jacksons, I remember being so excited about their Victory Tour back in 1984! All six brothers hit the road from July to December, playing 55 shows – mostly in massive stadiums. It was a groundbreaking tour, and they actually set a new record for how much money it earned. It really was a special time to be a fan!
This tour was the final time Michael Jackson performed with his brothers before he began his solo ‘Bad’ tour in 1987.
Did Joe Jackson hit Michael Jackson when he was younger?
The film depicts Joe Jackson physically abusing Michael with a belt after a performance, when Michael voiced his exhaustion. Disturbingly, neither Katherine Jackson nor Michael’s siblings intervened to prevent the abuse.
In a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jackson shared that he grew up fearing his father, who he said was physically and emotionally abusive.
“Would he … did he ever beat you?” asked Oprah, to which Michael responded “Yes”.
He described his father as a demanding and intimidating figure. He wasn’t sure if he was favored, but his father was incredibly strict and harsh. Just a glance from him was enough to frighten anyone. He recalled instances where his father’s visits would make him physically ill, even causing him to become nauseous.
Joe Jackson denied the accusations, explaining that while Michael received occasional spankings as a child, he was never physically abused.
He previously explained to Louis Theroux that he didn’t ‘beat’ his son, but instead disciplined him with a switch and a belt, clarifying that ‘beating’ someone involves using a stick.
Theroux pressed Joe about his son’s comment about ‘regurgitation.’ Joe responded with a boast, saying his son was very successful and profited greatly from it.
Theroux followed up by asking for clarification: “I’m not following you. Are you saying you don’t think he’s telling the truth, or that you simply don’t have an opinion?”
Joe responded: “Do I really care? I really don’t.”
Did John Branca really send a fax firing Joe Jackson?
I remember reading that Michael hired John Branca as his lawyer back in 1980, right after the Off the Wall album came out. It was a big move for him, getting a dedicated entertainment lawyer at that point in his career.
This new position led to him taking over as Michael’s manager, replacing Joe Jackson and giving him greater influence over Michael’s career path.
The movie shows Michael requesting that Branca fire his father, and Branca complied by sending a fax.
However, there’s no proof that this is actually what led to Joe being fired as Michael’s manager.

Did Michael Jackson get a nose job to resemble Peter Pan?
Okay, so the film presents this interesting idea that Michael Jackson wanted a nose job to look like Peter Pan from a childhood book. But, according to his biographer, Randy Taraborrelli, the story isn’t quite that simple. Taraborrelli claims Michael actually had his first nose surgery because he injured it, not for cosmetic reasons. It’s a significant difference, and really shifts how you view that part of his life, at least according to the biographer.
I recently learned something fascinating about him! Apparently, he had his first nose job when he was around 19, but it wasn’t because of wanting to change his looks. He actually fell on stage and broke his nose, so it was a necessary medical fix, not a cosmetic one.
In his 1988 autobiography, Michael Jackson stated he’d only had two nose surgeries and refuted claims that he’d undergone many more.
Did Michael Jackson unite two gangs for Beat It music video?
The music video for “Beat It” famously includes around 80 real members of the Crips and Bloods gangs from Los Angeles.
According to the director of the music video, Bob Giraldi, Michael Jackson was the one who found and hired the gang members featured in it.
He explained that he worked with the LAPD’s gang squad to bring people together. He persuaded them that a strong police presence would be helpful and positive – a way to get everyone to connect and collaborate on the video shoot for two days.
“I didn’t like the idea because it was hard enough to direct actors and dancers, let alone hoods.”
Did Michael Jackson announce on stage that the Victory tour was the Jackson 5’s last show?
I remember being there when Michael Jackson made that announcement on stage – it was a real moment. He told the crowd that the Victory Tour would be the final time he and his brothers would perform as a group. It felt huge at the time, and sadly, it turned out to be true.
“This is our last and final tour,” he said on stage. “And I think this is our farewell tour.”
