Look, I get it – there are tons of amazing FPS games already, and most of us don’t want another endless list of stuff to check out. But honestly, there are some seriously underrated shooters that I think deserve way more attention. They’ve flown under the radar for too long, and I really think you should add them to your backlog. They’re definitely worth playing, even if they’re not perfect and have split opinions sometimes. What’s so cool is that each one brings something totally unique to the table, which is why it’s so surprising they didn’t become huge hits.
There’s a fantastic first-person shooter out there for every player, whether you enjoy huge, well-known games or something completely new. You can find hidden gems like open-world survival shooters similar to Far Cry that didn’t get enough attention, or brilliant Warhammer 40,000 games that were overlooked when they first came out. If you love action-packed gunplay and immersive single-player stories, these underrated FPS titles are perfect to play while you wait for the next big release.
5. Syndicate (2012)

I first encountered the 2012 reboot of Syndicate when I was a teenager, and I was immediately struck by how polished it looked and sounded, with its vibrant neon environments and energetic music. Even today, those elements, along with the satisfying shooting mechanics, still impress. Though it wasn’t a hit with everyone, there’s a lot to enjoy in this more direct, action-oriented game – it’s similar to Deus Ex but with a focus on explosive, unique abilities, like forcing enemies to self-destruct.
It’s easy to see why Syndicate (2012) didn’t get much attention when it came out, but it deserves another look. While it’s quite different from the original, it’s a genuinely fun game. It boasts inventive shooting mechanics, intelligent enemies, well-crafted levels, a striking visual style, and it’s a reasonable length – you can finish it in about six hours. Plus, it features appearances from several famous actors, an interesting story, and a fantastic soundtrack, especially during one particularly exciting scene. If you’re looking for a good cyberpunk first-person shooter, Syndicate is definitely worth playing.
4. Space Hulk: Deathwing – Enhanced Edition

The initial release of Space Hulk: Deathwing was quite rocky, which likely explains why it’s not as well-known as other games in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Thankfully, the developers at Streum On Studio (also known for the overlooked E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy) quickly fixed many of the problems and released a much-improved Enhanced Edition. While the original version caused some controversy among Warhammer fans, the updated edition is now considered one of the best. It features a beautiful art style and a clear love for the source material, with the Space Hulk itself rendered in incredible detail.
The game creates a truly oppressive atmosphere; you really feel the weight of your powerful Terminator armor with every step. The claustrophobic corridors are perfectly set up for overwhelming waves of Tyranids, and the ability to lock doors adds a nerve-wracking tension reminiscent of the movie Alien. Space Hulk: Deathwing is a brutally difficult, intensely thrilling first-person shooter that deserves far more recognition, especially from fans of Warhammer. While the story isn’t the strongest part, each level is a brilliantly crafted experience filled with dread, tension, and plenty of gruesome detail.
3. Metro 2033

If you’re looking for a scary and suspenseful experience, Metro 2033 is a fantastic first-person shooter, and it’s based on a book I absolutely love. While the game doesn’t delve as deeply into the philosophical ideas found in Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novel, it perfectly recreates the book’s unsettling mood, grim setting, and intense horror. It blends survival horror with fast-paced shooting, all driven by a compelling story and great performances as you navigate the Russian metro system after a devastating apocalypse.
If you like a good mystery, a bit of a scare, and some supernatural elements, Metro 2033 is a fantastic choice. I think its roughly 9-hour story is one of the best single-player campaigns in the first-person shooter genre. The Redux edition makes the already beautiful graphics even better, creating a truly immersive and unsettling world. Metro 2033 is a unique experience, comparable only to its sequels and maybe the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, which deserve more recognition.
2. Metal Eden

It’s surprising that Metal Eden isn’t more popular, especially given its impressive quality, the skilled team who made it, and its affordable price. From Reikon Games, the creators of the praised Ruiner, Metal Eden is a quick and exciting shooter. It successfully combines the smooth movement and exploration of Titanfall 2, the world and story style of Ghostrunner, and the intense, arena-based action of DOOM.
If you enjoy mystery stories, futuristic cyberpunk worlds, quick action, and satisfying gunfights, then Metal Eden is a game you should definitely check out. It’s a bit short, but the story and how it ends are well worth the time. And, naturally, the shooting is excellent – it’s a first-person shooter, after all! Reikon Games really shows its talent with Metal Eden, proving they know what makes a great FPS. Hopefully, this game won’t be overlooked, as it deserves to be remembered as a standout title. If it had come out a decade ago, it would likely be considered a classic.
1. Homefront: The Revolution

I believe Homefront: The Revolution is a surprisingly good game that was unfairly criticized when it first came out. It’s a really creative first-person shooter that excels at building suspense through its well-designed, smaller open-world areas. Each location starts with you having almost nothing, and your goal is to gradually take control. Think of the gameplay from Far Cry, but on more compact maps that are packed with enemies. You’ll have to carefully sneak through ruined cities, crumbling buildings, and heavily guarded wealthy neighborhoods as you work to overthrow the oppressive government that has seized control of America.
This game is a fantastic concept, and it’s brilliantly brought to life. The combat is fast-paced and gritty, and the deep weapon customization lets you completely change how a gun performs during a fight. Exploring the world is consistently exciting, whether you’re cautiously entering a new area or returning as a powerful player. And simply riding a motorcycle through the ruins of America is always fun. While the main story isn’t groundbreaking, the game creates so many unique moments and personal stories that it more than compensates. Homefront: The Revolution takes the strengths of games like Far Cry and improves on them significantly, creating a truly unique experience. I highly recommend it, especially if you’re looking for a shorter, but excellent, open-world shooter.
