Spider-Man/Superman #1 Is A Must Read For Fans of Marvel, DC, and Great Superhero Stories (Review)

The team-up between DC and Marvel has given us some fantastic stories, and following the great DC/Marvel: Superman/Spider-Man #1, Marvel now delivers the highly anticipated Marvel/DC: Spider-Man/Superman #1. This series features nine different stories and exciting team-ups, going beyond just Superman and Spider-Man’s immediate circles. When Spider-Man and Superman do team up, the results are amazing, and Spider-Man/Superman #1 perfectly demonstrates what makes these DC and Marvel crossovers so special.

Following the amazing first issue of DC/Marvel: Superman/Spider-Man was a tough act, but this new installment delivers. That’s not surprising, considering the incredible team of writers and artists working on it. With talents like Brad Meltzer, Pepe Larraz, and many others – including Geoff Johns, Brian Michael Bendis, and Jason Aaron – this issue was always going to be special, and they didn’t disappoint.

The Issue Moves More Than Just Superman and Spider-Man Characters Into The Spotlight

Spider-Man/Superman #1 Leads With Its Best (But It’s Not The Only Standout By A Long Shot)

This issue kicks off with a fantastic story, “Our Kryptonite,” brought to life by the skilled creative team of Brad Meltzer, Pepe Larraz, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles. Larraz and Wilson work together brilliantly, seamlessly capturing the essence of both Spider-Man and Superman. Their work is so impressive, it feels like they’ve been writing both heroes for years! It’s a captivating read from start to finish.

This comic truly shines in both its epic action sequences, like the incredible fight between Spider-Man and a Superman possessed by Venom, and its quiet, heartfelt moments. Even simple conversations between these relatable heroes about their motivations are powerfully done. The story culminates in a particularly memorable scene with Clark, Peter, and their loved ones, leaving you with a fantastic Superman/Spider-Man team-up and a deeper appreciation for the human side of these iconic characters and what drives them to be heroes.

This issue also nicely showcases the talented creative teams behind the stories. Joe Kelly, Humberto Ramos, Edgar Delgado, and Joe Caramagna deliver a charming tale with Gwen Stacy and Lana Lang in “Sweethearts,” and Louise Simonson, Todd Nauck, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Joe Caramagna give Steel a great spotlight in the Hobgoblin vs. Steel story, “Ghosting.” Jason Aaron, Russell Dauterman, Matthew Wilson, and Joe Caramagna really shine with “The Wondrous & The Worthy,” a Jane Foster and Wonder Woman team-up that’s become an instant favorite.

This issue features two standout stories: Identity War by Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Brad Anderson, and Joe Caramagna, and The One Thing by Brian Michael Bendis, Sara Pichelli, Federico Blee, and Joe Caramagna. While Identity War is full of action, it’s really a moving story about the destructive power of anger and the importance of how we treat each other. It was also a pleasant surprise to see a thoughtful conversation between Superman and The Thing this month – a truly great moment!

The long-awaited team-up of Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, The One Thing, is a resounding success. Miles Morales has a knack for bringing out the best in other characters, and his interaction with Superman is no exception. Bendis builds a consistently tense atmosphere due to the looming danger, but it’s the conversation between Clark Kent and Miles that truly shines. This pairing is so strong, fans will hopefully see it again in future stories.

Not Everything Quite Hits The Target

Though most of the stories in this issue are strong, a couple didn’t quite hit the mark. Metropolis Marvels, created by Dan Slott, Marcos Martin, Muntsa Vicente, and Joe Caramagna, has a promising idea and beautiful illustrations, but the plot doesn’t really develop and ends rather quickly.

Jeph Loeb, Jim Cheung, Jay David Ramos, and Joe Caramagna’s One of Those Days gets off to a great start, but the conversation between Spider-Man and Superman could have been a little longer to truly shine. Currently, Superman doesn’t always seem fully engaged with the weight of Spider-Man’s concerns, and the story feels somewhat rushed at the end.

I was really looking forward to reading “Remarkable,” the story with Ghost-Spider and Supergirl by Stephanie Phillips, Phil Noto, and Joe Caramagna. The idea of these two strong, independent characters having some friction while teaming up works well enough, but Supergirl’s portrayal didn’t quite feel right to me. It’s just my opinion, of course, but her characterization here didn’t match how she’s usually written in other comics.

As a huge film and comic book enthusiast, I can tell you that Spider-Man/Superman #1 is absolutely essential reading. It’s not just for fans of those two characters – it’s a fantastic crossover that truly captures the spirit of both Marvel and DC. Honestly, it sets a new standard for how these big, universe-spanning events should be done. It really delivers and exceeds expectations!
