There’s a new development regarding the next Mass Effect game, though its official title is still unknown. It’s currently unclear if the story will follow Commander Shepard and their crew, continue the storyline from Mass Effect: Andromeda, or head in a completely different direction.
Despite difficulties at BioWare, a new Mass Effect game is still in development. While some fans have begun to focus on other games, the developers recently shared a surprising and positive update about the project.
What’s Going On With Mass Effect 5?
“Busy Workin’,” Says BioWare
When a fan on X (formerly Twitter) asked BioWare’s Michael Gamble for an update on the next Mass Effect game, he simply replied that he’s been very busy working and doesn’t have much time for previews or announcements, as reported by GamesRadar.
This isn’t a huge announcement, but it does confirm that Mass Effect 5 is still being developed, which is good news after a long silence. The casual and understated way the update was shared is actually reassuring – it feels like the game is progressing normally.
BioWare has faced a difficult period recently. Their latest game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, didn’t sell well, partly due to controversy surrounding its LGBTQ+ representation and writing. Following the game’s release, its director, Corrine Busche, departed the company. BioWare then experienced layoffs, affecting many team members who worked on Veilguard.
Last January, BioWare closed the online servers for their role-playing game, Anthem. While initially highly anticipated, the game suffered from significant problems after its release. Since then, it’s been unclear what BioWare’s next project would be, making the recent update about Mass Effect particularly welcome news.
Mass Effect Fans Are Hungry For News
When Might We Hear More?
Fans are really eager for any updates on Mass Effect, with some even directly messaging Michael Gamble on Twitter to ask. While the conversations have calmed down, most people are asking others to be patient and let the developers work. However, everyone still wants to know: when will we finally get news about Mass Effect 5?
Many fans believe November 7th – known as N7 Day – is when we’ll likely hear news about the next Mass Effect game. N7 Day is named after Commander Shepard’s military rank from the original trilogy and has become an annual event for Mass Effect announcements. It’s a good time for BioWare to share something, as it’s far enough out that they have time to prepare, but not so far that hype will be overwhelming.
Don’t expect too much, but it’s encouraging to know BioWare is still working on things. While a full trailer or release date seems unlikely in the near future, there’s a chance we might get a small preview, announcement, or some kind of update on N7 Day. We’ll just have to see what happens with Mass Effect 5.
