The strength of a sitcom lies in its characters, but sometimes the supporting characters are actually more memorable or funnier than the main stars. Shows will occasionally adapt by giving these supporting characters more attention as the series goes on. Interestingly, this has happened with some of the most beloved sitcoms ever made.
I’ve noticed something about sitcoms – a lot of them live by their leads. Think about it: The Office wouldn’t be the same without Michael Scott, and Curb Your Enthusiasm needs Larry David to work. Even All in the Family revolved around Archie Bunker! Some shows, like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The Golden Girls, are different – they’re great because of the whole group. But sometimes a show just doesn’t quite get it right with its main character, and honestly, I think these six shows actually have stronger, more memorable supporting casts.
5) Community

While Community appears to be an ensemble show, this wasn’t the original plan. Season one centered around Jeff Winger, but he lacked the personality to carry the series as the main character. The supporting characters were so vibrant and unique that they naturally stole the spotlight. The show’s creators eventually realized this and wisely adjusted the focus to share the story equally among the entire cast.
4) Parks and Recreation

Both Parks and Recreation and The Office share a similar style, but they differ in one key way: Michael Scott is the highlight of The Office, while Leslie Knope isn’t necessarily the best part of Parks and Recreation. Though Leslie is a strong and well-developed character, the contrast between her personality and the rest of the cast isn’t as extreme as in some other comedies. Her enthusiasm, intelligence, and ambition sometimes prevent her from being involved in the show’s funniest moments, which often revolve around other characters.
Characters like Ron Swanson are funny because they clash with everyone else – he’s a highlight of the show. April’s negativity and Andy’s naiveté also create fun interactions. Leslie, though well-intentioned, isn’t as entertaining because she’s always trying to fix problems instead of adding to the chaos.
3) The Andy Griffith Show

During the 1960s, The Andy Griffith Show was a huge hit, but surprisingly, Don Knotts as Barney Fife was actually the show’s biggest draw. Many viewers tuned in specifically for Barney, who was consistently the funniest character. This is reflected in the actors’ later careers – Don Knotts found more sustained success than Andy Griffith after the show ended.
2) Arrested Development

The cast of Arrested Development is exceptionally funny, and many of its members – including Will Arnett, Michael Cera, David Cross, Alia Shawkat, and Tony Hale – have become major stars thanks to their memorable performances on the show. While Jason Bateman plays the lead, Michael Bluth, he doesn’t quite stand out as much as the other, more eccentric members of the Bluth family like Tobias, Gob, and Maeby.
1) Seinfeld

If you read the title of this list, you likely thought of Seinfeld. The show, famously “about nothing,” is known for an odd quirk: despite being centered around Jerry Seinfeld playing a version of himself, he’s often the least compelling character. Jerry usually acts as the sensible, straight man, simply observing the chaos around him. With such a quirky cast, this makes the main character surprisingly less interesting than those supporting him.
Most people who watch Seinfeld aren’t tuning in for Jerry himself. The real stars of the show are George, Elaine, and Kramer – they’re much funnier and consistently get into more engaging predicaments. Jerry mainly works as a character because of his relationships with these three, and without them, Seinfeld likely wouldn’t have become such a popular show.
