As a longtime anime fan, it’s clear to me that Gundam is the biggest name in the mech genre. The series just keeps coming, with new anime and movies released regularly. The creator, Yoshiyuki Tomino – who’s 84 years old now – is still actively involved, giving talks about Gundam and sharing his thoughts. Recently, he gave an interview where he didn’t hold back when discussing the current state of the Japanese government, offering a very direct assessment of how things are going.
The Mobile Suit Gundam series has always explored the realities of war, initially portraying the conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. In a recent interview with Animage magazine, creator Yoshiyuki Tomino expressed his strong dissatisfaction with Japan’s current political leadership. He pointed out that authoritarian regimes can rise to power through elections, comparing the situation in Japan to historical examples like Nazi Germany, and lamenting what he sees as a lack of awareness among the public. Given Gundam’s long-standing anti-war message, it’s unsurprising that Tomino would offer such political commentary.
Gundam Creator Controversy
I’ve noticed Tomino, the creator of Gundam, isn’t shy about voicing his criticisms. It’s not just the Japanese government he’s been critical of, but also some of the show’s fans. He feels many get caught up in the cool robots and battles without really understanding the anti-war message he tries to convey. He worries they’re just enjoying a military-focused hobby and that the deeper meaning isn’t getting through. He also feels that newer Gundam creators lack a real understanding of war, making the stories feel more like fantasy than a reflection of its realities, and he takes some responsibility for not having instilled that understanding properly.
The creator of Gundam believed it’s unrealistic to expect one person to solve a nation’s problems. He stressed the importance of everyone thinking critically and working towards peace, stating, “In politics, you can’t simply ‘leave everything’ to one person. We all need to think seriously.” He hoped Japan would actively contribute to world peace.
I’m excited to see a classic Gundam war return to North American cinemas this year! On May 15th, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway’s Flash: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe will be showing, bringing anime fans back to the world of Char and Amuro’s original conflict. Though the battle between Zeon and the Earth Federation was already over by the time Noa Hathaway arrived, this new Gundam pilot is considered a spiritual successor to both the hero and villain of the first series. It’s really anyone’s guess whether he’ll ultimately follow in Char’s footsteps or Amuro’s by the end.
