Nintendo announced that Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, a brand new adventure for Yoshi, will be available on May 21, 2026. The game will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2. It was originally shown during a Nintendo Direct presentation on September 12, 2025, as part of the Super Mario Bros. anniversary events, and a recent trailer on March 10, 2026, gave fans a better look at the gameplay and confirmed the release date.
The title marks the first new Yoshi game since Yoshiâs Crafted World in 2019.
A sentient encyclopedia falls from the sky

Mr. E, a talking encyclopedia that can think for itself, unexpectedly lands on Yoshiâs Island. He needs Yoshiâs help to learn more about the strange creatures described in his pages. By using Mr. Eâs magnifying glass, Yoshi can jump inside the book and explore each creatureâs home. Nintendo says Bowser Jr. will show up in these areas, but they haven’t revealed what part he plays in the story yet.
Creative problem-solving over conventional platforming
Unlike typical platformer games, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book focuses on discovering how different creatures behave. You’ll explore each creature’s home, try interacting with them in various waysâlike carrying, bouncing, or combining them with the environmentâand record your findings to earn Stars and unlock more of the story. You can even give each creature a unique name!
I’ve been following the previews of this game closely, and it sounds amazing! From what I’ve seen on sites like Video Games Chronicle and IGN, each area feels like its own little world you can really explore. And the coolest part? As you figure things out, the game actually shows your discoveries right on the environment itself! They’ve also shown off how there’s often more than one way to solve puzzles. Like, one example they gave was dealing with a beehive â you could eat the bees (seriously!), throw an egg at it, or even trap the stingers with a nut. Itâs all from hands-on previews so far, not official Nintendo info, but it sounds super creative.
This game sets itself apart from other 2D platformers on Nintendo, and if it lives up to its initial potential for interesting, interconnected gameplay, it could become something truly special.

A deliberate stop-motion aesthetic
The game has a unique visual style inspired by paper illustrations. Characters like Yoshi and the creatures feature a painted look, while backgrounds use simple pencil-style lines. Some animations, like Yoshiâs jumps, intentionally run at a lower frame rate to resemble classic stop-motion animation. This isnât due to technical limitations; it’s a deliberate artistic decision that many reviewers immediately noticed as a standout feature.
Accessible visuals, layered depth
Nintendo says the new Yoshi game focuses on exploring and finding hidden things. People who got to play it earlyâsometimes for over an hourâsaid it looks great and has cute creatures, making it perfect for younger players. But they also noted the puzzles were clever enough to keep experienced gamers engaged. Video Games Chronicle compared it to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, suggesting itâs a move toward letting players explore and solve problems in their own wayâthough Nintendo hasnât officially described it like that.
Get ready for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on May 21, 2026! You can pre-order the game now from the Nintendo eShop, GameStop, and Amazon.
