Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Remake Fully Revealed, Includes New Content and Big Changes

For a long time, everyone has known Ubisoft was working on a remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, and the company even jokingly acknowledged all the leaks. Details like screenshots, the release date, price, and gameplay features appeared online before Ubisoft could announce them officially. Now, the team has finally shared all those details in the game’s first official livestream.

I’m so excited for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced! It’s basically a remake of the 2013 game, and it comes out on July 9th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The standard version will be $59.99. If you want to go a little bigger, the Deluxe Edition is $69.99 and includes some extra character and ship customization options. But the Collector’s Edition is where it’s at – it’s $199.99 and includes everything from the Deluxe Edition, plus a really cool leather logbook, a skull brooch, a sheet of sea shanties, a cloth map, a steelbook case, and a statue of Edward Kenway chilling on a treasure chest! And good news – if you pre-order any version, you’ll get Blackbeard’s Crimson Pack, which gives Edward, his pistol, and his swords a cool red look.

The original Black Flag will remain available for purchase, which Ubisoft has confirmed (a welcome assurance, as sometimes older games are removed when new versions are released). The remake, Resynced, won’t include the Freedom Cry DLC or any multiplayer features; it’s a purely single-player experience. Importantly, it won’t be an RPG, addressing concerns that it might become similar to the loot-focused adventures in Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, and Shadows. The modern-day storyline, which featured the Abstergo Industries corporation, has been removed. Instead, the game will focus on the Animus device and its connection to Edward Kenway’s memories and inner conflicts. While the exact details are still unknown, it appears the rumors were true: the corporate espionage and game development themes have been cut from the remake.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Has Many Technical Upgrades

Okay, so this remake isn’t just a fresh coat of paint – it’s getting a major upgrade. We’re talking seriously improved graphics with ray tracing and realistic lighting, plus a dynamic weather system that’ll actually change as you play. The biggest thing for me? No more waiting at loading screens when I go from my boat to exploring on land – it’s all seamless now! They’ve completely revamped the water too, making it look and feel amazing. It’s all built on the newest version of the Anvil engine, which is awesome. They haven’t given all the details for Xbox or PC yet, but on PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, I’ll be able to choose between 30, 60, and even 40 frames per second (if I have a 120Hz display), plus I’m hyped for the fast loading times, haptic feedback, and adaptive triggers. And if I’m playing on PS5 Pro, the graphics are going to be even better with an enhanced version of PSSR. Basically, it’s going to look incredible.

Okay, so beyond just fixing bugs and stuff, Ubisoft is really changing how the game feels. Stealth is way better now – I can actually fully crouch and hide in shadows, which is awesome. That wasn’t even a thing in the original until a later game! Combat is much faster, and every weapon feels like it has a specific purpose. I can quickly switch between my rope dart and pistol, and the parry system is totally reworked so skilled players can really show off. They’re also pushing you to use the environment to your advantage. Naval combat is also getting a big boost, with more weapons and different types of enemy ships depending on who they’re allied with. And the parkour! It’s been seriously upgraded. They added a manual jump, plus you can now do side and back ejects to get higher, and the transitions between moves are way smoother – it builds on the movement we saw in the last game, but it’s much more fluid.

Okay, so they totally changed how eavesdropping missions work, and honestly, it’s a huge improvement! Before, if you got spotted, the whole mission failed, which was super frustrating. Now, if you do get caught, it doesn’t end things – you just have to roll with it and change your plan. Ubisoft even admitted the old system was a problem when they announced the Resynced update, so I’m glad they listened!

While the previously released downloadable content isn’t part of this version, Resynced introduces three new officers who provide naval skills, each with their own unique quest. Players can also enjoy new quests featuring familiar characters and brand-new cutscenes. Edward Kenway’s ship, the Jackdaw, now offers more ways to customize its appearance, and you can even have a pet cat or monkey aboard! Kenway’s Fleet has been improved to allow players to earn income passively – a feature that used to require an online connection and a Uplay code. Plus, the classic sea shanties return alongside ten brand-new songs.

These changes are all part of a plan to recreate the game while staying true to the original, according to creative director Paul Fu. He explained that Resynced isn’t meant to be a complete reimagining, but rather a continuation of the original game’s vision. Fu emphasized that the team carefully considered whether every change or addition would fit with that vision. With other Assassin’s Creed remakes potentially in the works, it’s still unclear if this approach will be used for future projects.
