Xbox is rebranding, moving back to simply being known as Xbox. This isn’t just about the recent reveal of Project Helix with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson; Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma and content chief Matt Booty have officially confirmed the company is returning to the Xbox name.
The team explains that while ‘Microsoft Gaming’ accurately reflects how they’re organized, it doesn’t capture their goals. They’re returning to their roots and rebranding as simply ‘Xbox.’ They aim to foster a dynamic and innovative environment where bold ideas are encouraged. Their focus isn’t on minimizing differences, but on uniting everyone to create something bigger than individual studios or products.
The plan is quite ambitious, particularly the idea of actively challenging the status quo and being brutally honest with ourselves – even when it’s difficult. Right now, the team is focused on four key areas: improving the technology itself, the content we offer, the overall user experience, and the services we provide.
The biggest takeaway is that Xbox aims to deliver top-tier performance with Project Helix, a system that will support both console and PC games. Equally important, Xbox is focused on solidifying its current generation of consoles while also creating a thriving platform that offers players more options and wider access to games.
Xbox plans to strengthen its popular game franchises and improve relationships with other game companies. Its move into China is particularly noteworthy, as PlayStation has already gained a strong foothold there through programs like the China Hero Project and successful, time-limited exclusive games such as Black Myth: Wukong.
The company’s current focus on new markets and users who primarily play on mobile devices might not appeal to everyone. However, fans of live gaming can expect continued development and reliable support. They’re also working on making games accessible on more TVs and cheaper devices, enhancing the Game Pass service, and establishing Xbox as the top platform for game developers and creators.
Regarding exclusive games and the ongoing debate about AI, Microsoft Gaming’s leaders, Sharma and Booty, stated they’ll be revisiting their strategy as they gain more experience. This means even those who believe it’s too late to make Xbox games only available on Xbox might be surprised – anything could happen.
