The Marvel Cinematic Universe is entering a major new phase for Spider-Man (Tom Holland) with the upcoming film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Four years after everyone’s memories were erased at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker is now facing the challenges of adult life in New York City, all on his own without the help of Tony Stark or his close friends. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie focuses on a more grounded, street-level story. Familiar faces like MJ (Zendaya) and Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) will return, and audiences will be surprised to see Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) join the mix. While the film is being presented as a fresh start for Spider-Man, early looks suggest this new beginning will come with a significant and unexpected twist.
The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day hints that Peter Parker is changing – his body is either breaking down or becoming something more than human. We see him emerge from a strange, organic cocoon, and it looks like he’s developing the ability to shoot webs naturally, which is a big change from the tech-based web-shooters he’s used in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Bruce Banner thinks these changes might be a dangerous genetic mutation, possibly caused by Peter’s loneliness, Spider-Man’s comic book past suggests something else. This could mean Peter is unlocking a powerful, natural side of himself that has always been part of the character in the comics.
Will Spider-Man: Brand New Day Dig Into the Spider-Totem Lore?

For years, Spider-Man’s powers were explained as the result of a bite from a radioactive spider. However, Marvel Comics later introduced a more complex idea: the spider wasn’t just a random insect. According to writer J. Michael Straczynski, the spider that bit Peter Parker was a chosen agent of a powerful, multiversal force, meant to make him its representative. This concept establishes that in every reality, there’s a designated ‘Spider-Totem’ – a living being that protects the ‘Web of Life and Destiny.’ This Web is a real, interdimensional structure connecting all past, present, and future realities, essentially holding the entire multiverse together. Spider-Man’s ‘Spider-Sense’ isn’t just a feeling; it’s actually a subconscious connection to the vibrations of this vast Web, allowing him to sense danger before it happens.
The imagery used in the marketing for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, like the web cocoon, directly connects to the story of The Other. In that story, Spider-Man’s powers became unstable because he was being hunted by Morlun, a being who drains the life force of spider-powered individuals. When a spider-powered hero is severely threatened, or the mystical “Great Web” is stressed, they undergo a transformation—a kind of death and rebirth—to tap into a more instinctive, spider-like consciousness called “The Other.” This evolution gives them natural web-spinning and retractable claws, making them less human and more of the supernatural being they represent. Currently, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Great Web is clearly under immense strain due to the upcoming arrival of Victor von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, a film expected to cause widespread chaos and signal a major reboot of the MCU.
As a huge Spider-Man fan, I’ve been thinking about how they could tie his story into the bigger multiverse stuff, especially with Secret Wars coming up. I think the comics’ ‘Spider-Totem’ idea is brilliant, and if the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day series plays with that, it could be amazing. Basically, Peter’s powers could evolve as a natural defense against the collapsing multiverse – like his DNA is reacting to protect reality! It would explain a power boost, but more importantly, it would tie his everyday struggles as a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to his potential as a major cosmic hero. It could really redefine just how important Peter Parker is, not just to our world, but to all worlds, and make him a key player in saving everything!
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 31st.
