As a huge mech anime fan, whenever the topic comes up, it almost always leads back to Mobile Suit Gundam – it’s been around since the 70s and is a classic for a reason! But honestly, Gundam isn’t the only game in town when it comes to awesome mechs in anime. There are so many other incredible shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion, the original Mazinger, and more recently, Darling in the FranXX. And now, one series is about to make all of its episodes available for free, which is fantastic news for fans!
The popular anime series Macross is releasing a special Macross 7 box set in Japan called Macross 7 Re.MASTER FIRE!! 4K ULTRA HD Blu-ray BOX. To get fans excited, episodes of the anime will be shown on the Macross YouTube channel starting April 29th. This release includes three episodes that were never originally broadcast. However, the full series won’t be available all at once; three new episodes will be added each week. You can find the series here: [link to series].
Macross 7’s Director Talks About The Series’ Remaster
I recently spoke with Tetsuro Amino, the director of Macross 7, about the series’ upcoming remaster. He was really pleased with how it turned out! He said his first impression was that it looked absolutely beautiful – almost like a brand new show. He was even surprised by the picture quality, noting it didn’t look like an older anime, even though it maintains the original 4:3 aspect ratio. He jokingly wondered if it had been intentionally made that way! Ultimately, though, he felt the remaster’s freshness outweighed any nostalgic memories. He sees it as a fascinating record of how animation has changed over the years, and even speculated it might be in 3D within a decade. He was particularly impressed with the vibrant colors.
Along with announcing the remaster, the creators of Macross shared a message to fans, expressing gratitude for their long-time support. They recently rediscovered the joy of the series while singing “DYNAMITE EXPLOSION” at karaoke, realizing how fresh the music still sounds even after 30 years. They hope fans will enjoy the 4K remaster and find new details to appreciate. It’s been a while since fans last visited the world of Macross – the last series, Macross Delta, aired in 2015 – and with no new projects currently announced, this remaster is a welcome treat.
