One “Rare” Star Wars Force Power Is Becoming Absurdly Common

Over the nearly fifty years of the Star Wars franchise, we’ve seen a wide range of Force powers. While abilities like the Force choke and Jedi mind trick have been staples since the original movies, powers connected to lightsabers and other skills have grown significantly. Some of the newer abilities are much more frequently used than others, even considering when they first appeared. For instance, the unique powers displayed by Rey and Kylo Ren, stemming from their Force Dyad, were exceptionally rare and often completely new to the Star Wars universe.

Unlike some other abilities shown in the prequel trilogy, like Anakin Skywalker’s talent for technology – which wasn’t unheard of for a Jedi – the Force power of psychometry was truly rare. It didn’t appear in official Star Wars stories until the Clone Wars series, when Jedi Quinlan Vos used it. Since then, it’s shown up more and more, making a once incredibly unusual ability feel quite common.

Marrok Uses Psychometry In Maul – Shadow Lord

Psychometry is a rare Force ability that lets someone touch an object and learn about its past – sometimes even feeling what the object ‘felt’ before. It was first shown in the official Star Wars story with the character Quinlan Vos in The Clone Wars. More recently, it appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and this is probably the version most fans remember. In that film, Rey touches Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber and instantly sees memories linked to it.

Besides Luke Skywalker, other characters who have demonstrated psychometry include Cal Kestis, a popular figure from the Star Wars Jedi video games, and Ahsoka Tano. In the Ahsoka series, Ahsoka used this ability with the Star Map to perceive its past. This power is becoming increasingly prominent in on-screen Star Wars stories, and now another character has been added to those who can use it.

In the Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord comic, the Imperial Inquisitor Marrok demonstrates a similar ability. After touching lightsaber burns left from a fight between Maul, Devon, and Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki, he can hear echoes of the battle. Although it’s not as complete a vision as Rey’s in The Force Awakens, this strongly suggests Marrok is using a power that allows him to perceive past events through touch.

This Force Power Is No Longer Incredibly Rare

Marrok’s ability to use psychometry suggests this Force power might not be as uncommon in the Star Wars universe as previously thought. It’s not just that another character can do it, but who can do it is significant. Unlike Jedi like Quinlan, Rey, Ahsoka, and Cal, Marrok isn’t connected to the Jedi Order. While psychometry wasn’t always seen as strictly a ‘light side’ power, it was generally believed to require a great deal of Force strength, something typically associated with Jedi.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I always thought Rey was a bit of a special case – she bent the rules a lot, even early on in The Force Awakens. She used this ability to touch an object and see its history – psychometry, I think it’s called – and it felt really powerful for someone who hadn’t even started Jedi training yet. So when I saw an Inquisitor using the same power, it kind of diminished how special it was. It made it seem less like a rare, incredibly strong ability that took years to master, and more like something anyone with a bit of Force sensitivity could do.

Is Star Wars Running Out Of New Tricks?

The recent discovery that Marrok probably uses psychometry isn’t the only thing making fans wonder if Star Wars is becoming too reliant on familiar ideas. While the Maul – Shadow Lord series is popular and well-liked, it focuses on a character who’s been a key part of the Star Wars universe since 1999. This comes after previous instances, like Palpatine’s unexpected return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, where new concepts haven’t quite landed.

Look, I was worried when I heard about psychometry showing up in Maul – Shadow Lord. I thought, ‘Oh no, is this going to ruin everything?’ But honestly, Shadow Lord has been a really great surprise – Star Wars seriously needed a win, and this felt like it! Still, it’s a little disappointing to see another cool, rare Star Wars idea become more widely used. It feels like they’re taking things that made the universe special and making them… well, less special.
