Taylor Sheridan’s Controversial Neo-Western Dominates Streaming Charts After New Release

Taylor Sheridan became a major success with his hit show Yellowstone on Paramount Network (later Paramount+), and remained a favorite creator there for years. He followed Yellowstone with popular spin-offs like 1883, 1923, and Marshals, and also created the series Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman. However, Sheridan is now moving away from Paramount+. He’s signed a new five-year deal with NBCUniversal. Interestingly, a recent season of one of his shows is now streaming on Prime Video and has quickly become very popular.

According to streaming data from FlixPatrol, the second season of Landman is a huge hit on Prime Video, quickly climbing to the number two spot behind From. This surge in popularity is likely due to fans who didn’t have Paramount+ finally getting a chance to watch it after the season aired from November 16, 2025, to January 18, 2026. The same is probably true for From, which originally aired on MGM+ and is now available on Prime Video.

Taylor Sheridan’s Landman Season 2 Rockets to Top of Charts

Taylor Sheridan’s series, Landman, quickly became a hit when its first season launched in 2024. Billy Bob Thornton starred as Tommy Norris, a landman and vice president of operations for M-Tex Oil. The show, based on the Boomtown podcast created by Christian Wallace, explores the complex world of oilfields in West Texas through Tommy’s experiences. However, the second season proved controversial and split audiences.

The acting in Landman remained strong, with Sam Elliott, Jon Hamm, and Demi Moore adding to the cast alongside Billy Bob Thornton. However, despite Thornton’s continued strong performance as the lead, many viewers and critics felt the female characters in the second season were poorly developed and relied on harmful stereotypes. This was particularly frustrating given the presence of Academy Award nominee Demi Moore. Some also found the storylines consistently favoring the oil industry to be repetitive and unengaging.

Even with the issues surrounding it, viewers have quickly started watching Season 2 now that it’s available on Prime Video. This isn’t unexpected, as Landman was also very popular when it first came out on Paramount+ last year, despite some criticism. On Paramount+, its ratings were comparable to those of big hits like Yellowstone and South Park. A third season is planned, but with Taylor Sheridan’s new deal with NBCUniversal, he’s probably leaving the show he created.

Although Season 2 of Landman wasn’t as impactful as the first season, it ended powerfully, leaving audiences eager for Season 3. A key question is whether the new showrunner can maintain the quality fans have come to expect from Taylor Sheridan’s shows. The season concluded with Tommy Norris starting his own oil company, CTT, making him a major player and promising significant changes in the future.
