Godzilla’s Teased Kaiju Battle isn’t Happening (& It’s Actually a Good Thing)

Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is taking the story in a new direction, moving away from the expected Godzilla battle. The show has introduced Titan X, a massive creature initially presented as a dangerous enemy. However, the series has revealed Titan X is actually a protective mother trying to safeguard her eggs, and unfortunately, humans exploited this vulnerability.

What’s interesting about Season 2 of Monarch is that the giant monsters (Kaiju) are becoming more relatable, while the human characters are increasingly acting like the bad guys. Lee Shaw intentionally tried to force a deadly fight between Godzilla and Titan X, and Isabel wants to control the Titans for her own purposes. The show takes a unique approach by simply presenting the Titans as a natural part of the world, while humans try to take advantage of them. This adds a thought-provoking layer to the season, but it also leads to a surprising shift in direction in episode 9 as the finale approaches.

Titan X Isn’t Going to Fight Godzilla At All (She’ll Fight Kong Instead)

Okay, so the end of Monarch Season 2, Episode 8 had me totally expecting an epic showdown. Titan X was chasing her egg, Godzilla was right behind her… I figured Episode 9 would be all Kaiju brawl, just like Lee Shaw probably would have predicted! But wow, was I surprised. Instead of fighting, Godzilla was basically playing monster shepherd! It turned out Titan X had wandered off course from Skull Island, lost her way after leaving Axis Mundi too early. Godzilla knew she needed to get back to the right rift to hibernate, and he just… guided her there. Then, like the true king of the monsters, he just dipped out. It was a really interesting twist – less battle, more monster responsibility!

The latest development is quite surprising. Throughout the season, Monarch led us to expect a showdown between Godzilla and Co’cai ever since Titan X emerged. However, the season will now conclude with Co’cai fighting Kong, the protector of Skull Island. Meanwhile, Apex has been creating technology to control the Titans, and Isabel has figured out how to use it to make Titan X, and therefore Co’cai, more aggressive. Her plan is to have an enraged Co’cai defeat Kong.

The first season of Monarch focused mainly on Godzilla, with other Titans appearing occasionally. Now, it’s clear the second season will center on Kong, and a new Titan, Titan X, will challenge him for control of Skull Island. This shift in focus makes sense for the story, but it’s a bit unexpected considering Godzilla has been heavily featured in the show’s promotion alongside Kong.

Monarch is Telling a Much Better Titans Story

While Monarch features giant monsters, the show is actually about how humans deal with their existence. With creatures like Godzilla and Kong now part of the world, people are responding in different ways. Some are afraid humanity’s place at the top of the food chain is threatened, while others want to control the Titans for their own benefit. Importantly, the show also explores the idea that humans and these massive creatures might be able to live together, sparking a really interesting debate about what that future could look like.

We’re developing an even more ambitious version of this technology. The Axis Mundi has a strange connection to time, something Lee Shaw discovered when he encountered his past self there. Isabel thinks it might be possible to travel through time, even suggesting ‘visiting’ the future. However, she’s primarily focused on changing the past – using her inventions to prevent G-Day and save many lives. If successful, her actions would effectively wipe the Monsterverse timeline clean.

Season 2 of Monarch has taken a surprising, but well-prepared, turn. The show has subtly hinted at this direction as its scientific ideas have developed. What’s really great is that it focuses on the human side of things – the emotional struggles of people trying to live in a world dominated by giant monsters, instead of just delivering another action-packed monster battle. This new approach is a smart move for Monarch, and it makes the upcoming finale very promising.
