Horror films come in many forms, from psychological thrillers and gruesome body horror to classic slashers, shaky found footage, sci-fi nightmares, and the stylish Italian giallo films. Each subgenre offers a unique kind of fear, and the best examples truly deliver. However, monster horror – especially zombie movies – remains incredibly popular. There’s something deeply unsettling about the undead that taps into our most primal fears. And soon, one of the greatest zombie films of all time will be leaving Netflix.
The popular Korean zombie film Train to Busan will be leaving Netflix on May 2nd. Released in 2016 and directed by Yeon Sang-ho, the movie centers on Seok-woo, a workaholic father, and his daughter Su-an as they travel by train to see her mother. Their trip quickly turns into a desperate struggle for survival when a zombie outbreak begins. It’s a thrilling and highly-regarded film that was a big success.
Train to Busan Is More About Humanity Than it Is a Zombie Outbreak

What makes Train to Busan truly special is that it’s far more than just a typical zombie horror film. While it delivers the scares with plenty of gore and terrifying moments, the movie is fundamentally about what it means to be human and what we value. The protagonist, Seok-woo, initially has his priorities skewed towards work, causing him to neglect his daughter and miss important events. But when a zombie outbreak occurs, his focus shifts to protecting his child and simply surviving. This becomes even harder because, as people often do in crises, some turn against each other in a desperate attempt to save themselves.
The story works on two levels: it’s about a father and daughter struggling to live, but also about society falling apart. This combination makes it especially unsettling because it feels so believable. While zombies might not be a realistic threat, the story easily makes you think about how you’d react to any major disaster and what truly matters to you. It’s a fantastic film, and you can still stream it for a few more days.
