As a total movie and TV fanatic, I’ve definitely noticed romantasy is everywhere right now! But honestly, K-dramas have been doing this blend of romance and fantasy for ages. Over the last ten years or so, we’ve seen a huge surge in books, shows, and movies that combine a great love story with fantastical elements. Think bestsellers like A Court of Thorns and Roses, popular shows like Outlander, or even movies like The Shape of Water – it works in any format! And it just keeps getting more and more popular, which is awesome to see.
Korean dramas have always loved combining romance and fantasy. Even before recent online trends popularized the genre, shows like My Love from the Star and Oh My Ghost skillfully blended magical elements with heartwarming love stories. In fact, many of the most beloved K-drama couples found their happy endings thanks to a little bit of magic. The K-drama industry is always changing, so even familiar storylines – like the classic romantasy blend – can be reimagined into something fresh and amazing.
Tale of The Nine Tailed
A Classic Story Highlighting An Iconic Creature From Asian Folklore
Western romantasy novels often feature fairies and other magical beings, and Korean fantasy dramas (K-dramas) have their own unique traditions, drawing on Asian myths and legends. The most common creature featured is the gumiho – a nine-tailed fox spirit. While many K-dramas, like My Roommate Is a Gumiho and No Tail to Tell, have explored this idea in interesting ways, Tale of The Nine Tailed remains the most popular and well-known example.
This 2020 series is a surprisingly intense and gripping fantasy, with a realistic and suspenseful take on a forbidden love story. The romance has a touch of sadness, as the female lead reminds the centuries-old fox spirit, Lee Yeon, of all his past loves and losses. Despite this, the actors have fantastic chemistry, and the show features a truly memorable K-drama villain.
While You Were Sleeping
A High-Octane Mystery Mixed With A Fated Love Story
Unlike some shows, While You Were Sleeping blends a touch of the fantastical into a realistic setting. Right from the beginning, the K-drama hints that the romance between Nam Hong-joo (played by Bae Suzy) and Jung Jae-chan (Lee Jong-suk) won’t be easy—but that’s what makes a great love story, isn’t it?
Hong-joo, a journalist, and Jae-chan, a prosecutor, both have strange dreams that show them what’s going to happen. But knowing the future doesn’t mean they can prevent it. They team up with a police officer to try and change the course of events and avoid the disasters they’ve foreseen. As they work together, a strong attraction grows between them, and it’s possible this connection is the most powerful fate of all.
Doom at Your Service
The Most Romantic Apocalypse In Television History
Like many stories, Doom at Your Service centers around challenging destiny—specifically, the will of a powerful god. When Tak Dong-kyung (Park Bo-young) learns she has terminal cancer, she unexpectedly lashes out in anger and frustration. Little does she know, Myulmang (Seo In-guk), a grim reaper from the K-drama world, overhears her and uses her despair as a reason to bring about the end of the world.
The series begins with a surprising turn: Dong-kyung unexpectedly finds comfort in the very being destined to bring about the apocalypse. As they connect, a conflict arises within Myulmang, who has waited centuries for the world to end, as he finds himself falling for a human and questioning his purpose. Though Doom at Your Service is a recent release, its love story feels classic and enduring. Just be prepared – the ending is incredibly emotional!
The Beauty Inside
A Ridiculous Premise That Packs A Shockingly Heartfelt Punch
Many romantic fantasy K-dramas acknowledge their fantastical elements, but The Beauty Inside feels more grounded in magical realism. This 2018 romance centers around Han Se-gye (played by Seo Hyun-jin), a famous actress with a strange curse: once a month, she transforms into a completely different person – someone who could be any age, gender, or ethnicity. The changes happen unpredictably.
This K-drama’s central romance features Seo Do-jae (Lee Min-ki), a reserved executive secretly living with face blindness. He finds an unexpected connection with someone who has felt like an outsider for just as long. What makes The Beauty Inside stand out is how naturally it presents Se-gye’s unusual condition. The show skillfully helps viewers understand and accept it as simply a part of who she is, rather than an unresolved plot point. By the end, it feels like a charming personality trait, not a problem.
See You in My 19th Life
A Bittersweet Tale Of Reincarnation & Rewriting Destiny Itself
Many K-dramas feature fantastical stories, and a common theme is reincarnation. The drama follows Ban Ji-eum, played by Shin Hye-sun, who has lived multiple lives, remembering each one. In her 18th life, she unexpectedly finds love, but a sudden accident causes her to be reborn into a new body.
After living for almost a thousand years, Ji-eum decides to use her 19th life to reconnect with the person she loves most. The K-drama offers a unique and thoughtful take on the idea of immortality, with surprising depth. It’s easily one of the most romantic choices for fans of romantasy stories.
My Demon
Even Supernatural Monsters Can Enjoy A Fake Dating Scheme
Supernatural romance K-dramas often feature dark and monstrous beings, but the male lead in My Demon is actually a demon from hell. He meets Do Do-hee (Kim You-jung), a ruthless CEO, and unexpectedly loses his powers. For two centuries, this demon, Jeong Gu-won (Song Kang), hunted down corrupt people, taking their souls as punishment for breaking deals with the underworld.
Things got seriously messed up, and somehow the demonic tattoo that gave Gu-won his powers ended up on Do Do-hee! Now, we’re watching this crazy ride of fake dating, family inheritance fights, and a bit of vigilante action as they try to figure out what their connection even means. Honestly, Song Kang has been in a lot of dramas, but My Demon is a hidden gem – if you love romantic fantasy, this show is absolutely perfect. It’s everything!
Lovely Runner
Arguably The Best Time Travel Plot Of The 21st Century
Even though it just started airing in 2024, Lovely Runner is quickly becoming a beloved K-drama and is already one of the most popular romantasy series of its kind. The story centers on Im Sol (Kim Hye-yoon) and Ryu Sun-jae (Byeon Woo-seok) at different points in their lives, connected by a mysterious murder that causes unexpected events. Currently, Ryu Sun-jae is a famous singer, and Im Sol is his devoted fan. But when Im Sol finds herself transported back to 2008, she discovers her idol was actually her neighbor – and someone who secretly liked her.
Lovely Runner has set a high bar for K-dramas involving time travel, but what truly captivates viewers is the intricate relationship between Sun-jae and Sol. The show consistently builds suspense, leaving audiences wondering how each new event will change the future. Already a near-perfect blend of romance and fantasy, Lovely Runner promises to become even more beloved over time.
Destined with You
A Delightful Pair Tackle A Centuries-Old Curse With Perseverance & The Power Of Love
Romantasy often blends with other genres, and the combination of romantasy and mystery is particularly compelling. A great example is Destined with You, a captivating story about a successful lawyer who’s secretly under an ancient curse, and the ordinary woman fate brings into his life to break it. As they try to uncover the truth and secure their future, they’ll need to explore the connections from their shared past.
Rowoon and Jo Bo-ah play Shin-yu and Hong-jo, who initially clash before bonding while trying to solve the mystery of an old book. Shin-yu is the latest in his family to be affected by a long-standing curse, and Hong-jo unexpectedly shakes up his controlled life. Beyond a memorable kiss, the K-drama Destined with You features a captivating mystery that unfolds as the two main characters fall for each other.
Hotel del Luna
A Highly Stylized Fantasy World Hidden Within An Unassuming Hotel
Beyond being one of IU’s most successful K-dramas, Hotel del Luna beautifully combines fantasy and romance. IU plays Jang Man-wol, who is cursed to manage the Hotel del Luna for over a thousand years as punishment for her past misdeeds. She must repeatedly find a human to serve as the hotel’s manager. Enter Gu Chan-sung (Yeo Jin-goo), whose father made a deal that bound him to manage the hotel after a 21-year delay.
| Hotel del Luna‘s Staff | |
|---|---|
| Character | Title |
| Jang Man-wol | Owner of Hotel del Luna |
| Gu Chan-sung | General Manager |
| Ji Hyun-joong | Receptionist |
| Choi Seo-hee | Housekeeper |
| Kim Seon-bi | Bartender |
Hotel del Luna is a visually captivating drama, with a beautiful style that permeates every scene. While the gorgeous costumes and lovely music initially attract viewers, it’s the show’s genuinely moving story that truly holds their attention throughout all 16 episodes.
Alchemy of Souls
In A Kingdom Forged By Magic, Two Unlikely Allies Become Star-Crossed Lovers
Despite the rise in popularity of romantasy K-dramas, Alchemy of Souls remains a standout. This historical drama follows Nak-su, a powerful mage played by Jung So-min, who accidentally swaps bodies with a servant named Mu-deok during a fight. When Nak-su’s former love, the nobleman Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook), learns her secret, they strike a bargain: she’ll train him in magic if he keeps her true identity hidden.
Despite facing challenges like political schemes and betrayal within the kingdom, the connection between Jang Uk and Nak-su goes beyond just romance – it’s truly transformative. This popular series is considered one of the best K-dramas available to stream, and it attracts a wider audience than many others. It’s safe to say that Alchemy of Souls represents the height of the K-drama romantasy genre.
