After a rocky run that included one cancellation and then a final, permanent one over 20 years ago, a beloved sci-fi series from the 1990s is now available to stream in its entirety on Tubi. Tubi already had a strong selection of science fiction, including popular shows like The 4400 and critically acclaimed films such as High Life, and they added all episodes of this ‘90s hit in April.
The sci-fi show Roswell is a prime example of successful fan activism. Based on the Roswell High book series, the show premiered on The WB in 1999 and quickly gained a dedicated following. When it was canceled after just two seasons in 2001, fans launched a passionate “Save Roswell” campaign, famously sending Tabasco sauce to the show’s producers. UPN eventually revived the series for a third season, but it was canceled again in 2002, ending the show after 61 episodes. Now, all three seasons of Roswell are available to stream for free on Tubi as of April 1st.
Roswell Is One of the Most Iconic Teen Sci-Fi Dramas of the WB Era
Premiering when The WB was at its most popular, Roswell perfectly captured what the network was known for: dramatic teen storylines, exciting science fiction, and a captivating, atmospheric mood. It became a key example of the network’s teen sci-fi dramas. The show skillfully mixed intense sci-fi elements – like government secrets and the fate of aliens – with everyday teenage experiences and romance, grounding the fantastical premise in reality. The central relationship between alien Max Evans and human Liz Parker, a unique take on the Romeo and Juliet story, helped establish early fan ‘shipping’ culture. Beyond superficial plots, Roswell built a rich mythology and developed strong character connections, while its suspenseful and moody tone enhanced the show’s otherworldly feel.
The series was a hit with audiences, earning an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes over its three seasons and building a dedicated fanbase that successfully campaigned to prevent its cancellation. Even now, it’s remembered as a key show from the early 2000s teen drama era. Its popularity led to a reboot, Roswell, New Mexico, which aired on The CW from 2019 to 2022 and kept the original’s core themes of romance and science fiction. The reboot was also well-received, scoring 77% from critics and 64% from viewers.
Other Sci-Fi Titles Now on Tubi
Tubi is offering a fantastic selection of sci-fi movies this April! The streaming service added a bunch of new titles at the beginning of the month, and many are available to watch for free. Some highlights include Gemini Man, I Am Number Four, Sunshine, Timecrimes, Transcendence, and Under the Skin.
