What Is American Godfathers: The Five Families on Netflix About?
American Godfathers: The Five Families is a three-part documentary series detailing the history of New York City’s notorious Mafia families and their control of organized crime in the United States for over fifty years. It premiered on the History Channel on August 11, 2024, and isn’t a Netflix production. The series is narrated by Michael Imperioli, best known for playing Christopher Moltisanti in the HBO drama The Sopranos.
This six-part documentary series explores the history of New York City’s five Mafia families – from their origins to their eventual decline. Based on Selwyn Raab’s bestselling book, Five Families, the series traces the Mafia’s roots in Sicily and its growth in America, detailing its involvement in illegal activities like bootlegging, drug trafficking, and gambling.
In the early 1930s, five main Mafia families – the Maranzano, Profaci, Mangano, Luciano, and Gagliano groups – controlled organized crime in New York City. Each family had its own defined area and leaders, all operating under a single ruling body. They maintained power for roughly three decades, until 1963, when Joseph Valachi revealed their secrets during congressional hearings. This series explores the history of these families, including the events that eventually led to legal action against them through the RICO Act in the 1970s and 80s.
If you enjoyed The Godfather, you’ll be fascinated to learn it was inspired by real Mafia families. Author Mario Puzo thoroughly researched these families and incorporated his findings into the novel the film is based on. Many believe Vito Corleone, played by Marlon Brando, was modeled after Frank Costello, due to their similar ages and involvement in gambling. The attempt on Vito’s life, and his survival, mirrors a real attack on Costello. Both men ultimately retired after the assassination attempt. Now, fans of the iconic movie can discover the true story behind it, available now on Netflix.
